School board sets April election for vote on PPEL levy

On April 2, voters in the MFL MarMac Community School District will be asked if they would like to continue the district’s physical plant and equipment levy (PPEL). The MFL MarMac School Board unanimously approved the resolution setting the election date at its Jan. 21 meeting.

City-owned residential property back on the market in Monona

The city-owned property at 605 S. Main St., in Monona, is back on the market. At its Jan. 21 meeting, the council approved revised purchase agreement provisions for the sale of the property, and interested buyers are now welcome to stop by city hall to pick up an “offer to buy real estate and acceptance agreement” form.

The property was originally posted for sale late last year, and the city thought it had a buyer, but the offer fell through, prompting the council to reconsider options for the space.

Mar-Mac police chief shares 2018 statistics

Mar-Mac Police Chief Robert Millin presented the law enforcement district’s 2018 annual report at the Jan. 16 McGregor city council meeting. On the job since October, he admitted compiling the details was a bit difficult.

“I experienced many challenges to provide the most accurate representation of the police district’s activity in 2018,” he stated. “Some of those challenges were insufficient data and an outdated filing/record system.”

So far, Millin said he’s worked hard to implement “various duties, responsibilities and procedures to transition this agency into a transparent, accurate and effective police agency for the cities of Marquette and McGregor.”

McGregor groups provide annual updates

Several groups who receive funding from the city of McGregor provided their annual updates to the McGregor Council at its Jan. 16 meeting. 

Rebuilding year for city’s parks 

“2018 was a rebuilding year for our parks,” much as it was for the rest of the community following the 2017 tornado, said McGregor Park Board President Maria Brummel.

Marquette will continue to budget, research options for Pleasant Ridge drainage issues

Marquette residents who live along Pleasant Ridge Road will have to wait a little longer for a resolution to drainage issues in the neighborhood. At its Jan. 15 meeting, the city council decided to hold off on engaging engineering services for the project, instead opting to review the topic along with capital projects at an upcoming budget workshop. 

The council first discussed drainage issues in the area in September, after several inches of rain fell in a short time, washing debris and rivers of water onto properties, causing damage.

Bring your best memories and stories to share as the family of Gene Klinge celebrates his life on Jan. 26, at 1:30 p.m., in a place very special to him, the gymnasium which bears his name at West Central Community School in Maynard. The family is looking forward to visiting with everyone prior to the service from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

In the spirit of the occasion, the family requests those attending wear their favorite school apparel, be it Blue Devil blue, Indian orange, Hawkeye black and gold or even Minnesota Viking purple, or camouflage would be appropriate. If you’d rather, feel free to wear his signature red or orange socks in his honor.

A stinky situation: So-called ‘flushable’ products can cause costly sewer issues

City officials are asking local residents to watch what they flush down their toilets. 

In McGregor, one residence on Main Street was recently impacted by a sewage backup, and some downtown businesses have also faced issues. The city of Marquette dealt with a clogged pump around Christmas—an incident that could have resulted in a sewage backup into homes. 

The culprit, officials said, is a host of products like hand towels and disinfectant wipes that are marketed as “flushable” materials, but don’t flow through the sewer system or degrade like toilet paper.

Marjorie A. Goldsmith

Marjorie A. Goldsmith, 89, of McGregor, formerly of Earlville, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019.

Marjorie Ann Wells was born March 12, 1929, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Leslie and Ruth (Alexander) Wells. She married Willis Thuman in June 1948 in Oskaloosa, and he passed away in 1962. On Dec. 28, 1963, she married Alfred Goldsmith in Stone City. Marjorie was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where she enjoyed her church family and activities. She enjoyed baking, sewing and especially being with her family. She will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew her.
