Proposed Marquette zoning change would affect long-vacant downtown homes

Residential homes in downtown Marquette that have sat empty for extended periods of time will no longer have to be converted to commercial use on the lower level if a section in the city’s zoning ordinance is removed.

Marquette’s planning and zoning commission recommended the deletion at its quarterly meeting earlier this month. Zoning administrator Darren Matthew said the city’s attorney, Dan Key, did not see any issues with the change.

At its Aug. 16 meeting, the Marquette Council agreed to set a public hearing at the start of its Sept. 20 meeting regarding the change.

Getting a taste of last year’s state cross country meet through state qualifier Hannah Schutte, who returns as a sophomore this season, has sparked a lot of enthusiasm in the 2016 MFL MarMac cross country team, said fourth-year head coach Eliza Philpott. She is joined by assistant coach Eric Koenig, now in his second season.

Philpott and Koenig said this enthusiasm is one of the team’s strengths, and has translated into good, quality practices over the first couple weeks of the season.

“The kids come ready and willing for practice knowing it’s going to be tough, and that makes for an exciting environment,” they explained.

The new brand taps into the Buffet’s use of seasonal, fresh ingredients, many of which come from local vendors.

“It will allow us to highlight local vendors and let people know where the products come from,” shared Don Ostert, general manager/vice president of Lady Luck Marquette.

MFL MarMac to host regional youth football scrimmage

Over 1,600 people are expected to converge in Monona on Saturday, Aug. 27, as MFL MarMac hosts a regional youth football scrimmage.

The jamboree, which will begin in early morning and go into the afternoon, is run through the Youth Sports Foundation (YSF), said Jo Berns, with the MFL MarMac Booster Club, who’s helping to organize the event.

“Our fifth and sixth graders play with pads and helmets, and YSF is who we go through to get equipment,” she explained. “They’re also who sets up the schedule.”

Monona bandstand fundraiser planned

An ice cream social event to begin fundraising for repairs to Monona’s bandstand is planned for Thursday, Sept. 8, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the city park.

The event will be paired with a Community Visioning presentation, said mayor Barb Collins at Monday’s city council meeting. The landscape architects who have created plans for the city will present design boards showcasing some of the improvements Monona can incorporate regarding trails, parks, plantings and more.

Helen L. Stade, 95, of Marquette, Iowa, passed away on Friday, Aug. 5, at the Great River Care Center, McGregor, Iowa. 

Helen was born on March 6, 1921, rural Sny Magill, McGregor, Iowa, to Elmer and Leona (Hill) Hansen and attended country school.

Combined river patrol makes both sides of the Mississippi safer

Thanks to a joint patrol effort between the Clayton and Crawford County Sheriff’s Departments, both the Iowa and Wisconsin sides of the Mississippi River offer a safer environment for recreational activities.

The departments began the combined river patrol in 2015, said Clayton County Sheriff Mike Tschirgi. Prior to that, the county patrolled only its own 42 miles of river.

“With an officer from both counties riding in the same patrol boat, we can patrol both sides of the river and give better coverage,” Tschirgi explained, “along with saving in wages and promoting safer boating or recreation.”

Lunch bill woes hard to swallow

$20K in outstanding bills has MFL MarMac searching for solutions

MFL MarMac is searching for solutions to deal with $20,000 in outstanding lunch bills. 

“This is an ugly problem,” said superintendent Dale Crozier, who asked the school board for suggestions at its Aug. 8 meeting. “We have a lot of people who owe us for lunches. We need to do something.”

Crozier estimated 75 accounts are currently delinquent, with one as high as $1,500 in the red. A couple have reached $700, while several more are $500 behind.

‘Wild’ trespassers keep local police officers busy

In area communities, often the most annoying and frequent trespassers on people’s properties aren’t humans, but animals. These wild offenders keep local police busy, and occasionally entertained.

In area communities, often the most annoying and frequent trespassers on people’s properties aren’t humans, but animals. And while these critters might be stealing from your trash cans rather than your car, local police officers are still responsible for assuring they don’t become a further problem.

The Monona Police Department responds to around three animal-related calls each week, said police chief Jo Amsden.

“Usually they’re being a nuisance,” she said, “getting into garbage or ruining people’s gardens.”
