McGlaughlin, Meana top MFL MarMac Class of 2018

Hope McGlaughlin has earned the honor of being valedictorian of the MFL MarMac Class of 2018, while Jerica Meana has been named salutatorian.

Hope, who is the daughter of Wayne and DeeAnn McGlaughlin, said she’s known the distinction could be a possibility since she was a freshman.

“I didn’t really realize it, though, until this year,” she said. “I’ve worked hard and stayed focused, so it’s kind of nice to be recognized.”

Jerica, daughter of Troy Meana and Andra Meana, said she felt much the same.

Determination Park dedicated in Breitbach’s honor

Family members, colleagues, neighbors and community members all came together Saturday afternoon to dedicate McGregor’s Determination Park in honor of David J. Breitbach, a long-time resident and park board volunteer who passed away unexpectedly last summer.

Breitbach was the driving force behind the establishment of Determination Park, which is located in the Ridgewood West Subdivision, and wrote two successful Upper Mississippi Gaming Corporation grants that funded the park shelter and play structure.

U.S. Senator Joni Ernst visited Pattison Sand Company, in Clayton, May 4, as part of her 99-county tour.

During the one-hour stay, Ernst toured the Pattison site, learning about the operation’s history and its products.

“It’s interesting,” she shared. “This is my first time down here. They’ve grown so much...They’ve done well with taking challenges and making them into opportunities.”

MFL MarMac honored at state FFA convention

MFL MarMac earned special recognition at this year’s Iowa FFA Convention, held April 22-24 in Ames, as student Mackenzy Ruff was honored in front of thousands of attendees as the state’s 15,000th FFA member.

“The state’s been trying to hit [the 15,000 mark] the last few years,” said MFL MarMac’s agriculture teacher and FFA adviser Sarah Wille. “It was random luck that she was submitted into the state roster, that Mackenzy Ruff from MFL MarMac was the one to do it. It’s pretty exciting.”

The Driftless Area Wetlands Centre hosted a “Help Pollinators the DIY Way” event on May 5, giving attendees the opportunity to create their own bee nesting houses. Made by drilling holes in chunks of log or creating structures using bamboo, reeds or hollow stems, the houses can provide tunnel-like nesting space for the area’s solitary bees. 

These solitary bees, who don’t create hives or live socially, actually make up 30 percent of the nearly 300 bee species that call Iowa home, noted Wetlands Centre Director Alicia Mullarkey.

Joe Ferguson powered down his career as McGregor Municipal Utilities’ (MMU) power plant operator and water superintendent at the end of April, bringing nearly 40 years of service to the community to a close.

Ferguson took over as the power plant operator and fire, police and rescue dispatcher at MMU on Oct. 9, 1978, after working for the city of McGregor for four years.

“I was on the city street department and was asked if I was interested in coming over,” he recalled.

Staff at Great River Care Center and Turner Pointe Assisted Living, in McGregor, have planned a series of fun events they hope will connect the facility’s residents with other community members.

“Every six months, I get a project to do,” explained activity director Debbie Johnson. “This last project was about the community—bringing them in more and getting our residents out in the community.”

Residents volunteered at the McGregor Public Library Halloween party and Kindermusik, a popular music and movement program for kids, was brought to the facility, allowing residents to interact more with children.

Solving a 'prom'blem

After wintry weather forced the postponement of the MFL MarMac prom from April 14 to April 20, students, school officials, local businesses and staff at the Dousman House worked together to make the most of the unique scenario. No matter when it was held, the prom, with the theme “Roaring Twenties,” was a night to remember for many students. Students, businesses, venue work together when MFL MarMac’s prom is postponed

What do you do when your prom gets rescheduled? Last week, MFL MarMac went through a crash course in the scenario, with students, school officials, local businesses and venue staff coming together to make the most of a situation that had never before occurred in school history.

When word came in the morning of April 14 that the school’s prom, scheduled for that evening at the Dousman House, in Prairie du Chien, would have to be postponed due to impending sleet, snow and ice, students were initially disappointed.

Although recent cold temperatures and snowfall don’t lead one to think about thunderstorms, flooding and tornadoes, it’s never too early to prepare for the severe weather warmer months can bring.

“It’s important,” said Clayton County Emergency Management Coordinator Sarah Moser. “Take time to practice preparedness—where to be, what to do. The more you practice, the better you can react.”
