A tale of two halves: St. Ansgar rallies past Bulldogs in quarterfinal game

Just like he did throughout the season, running back Cullen McShane made Saints defenders miss Friday night. The junior ran the ball 10 times for 184 yards and a touchdown. The total pushed him to 1,477 yards on the season, surpassing the 1,312 by Brad Mohs in 1980 that was the single season school record.

Karter Decker streaked to the end zone after catching a pass from quarterback Max Havlicek in the first quarter of the Nov. 6 loss to St. Ansgar.

The MFL MarMac football team lost its Nov. 6 Class A quarterfinal game at undefeated St. Ansgar 49-14, closing the book on an unforgettable season.

“I’m extremely proud of these guys,” said head coach Dan Anderson. “Who would’ve thought, at the beginning of the season, we’d be sitting here in the quarterfinals—281 schools in the state of Iowa didn’t get the opportunity we had to play in the quarterfinals. That’s pretty special for the guys to make it that far with only one or two guys who were starters last year on offense. To start this game, we had 10 underclassmen starting on defense against a senior-laden team.”

Setting goals, keeping positive mindset helped Grau reach state level

MFL MarMac freshman Clare Grau has been a lifelong runner. In seventh grade, she joined the middle cross country team, then kept with the sport as she entered high school this fall.

“I enjoy running a lot,” she said. “It takes your mind off things.”

“And,” she added, “you can set goals for yourself.”

When the season started, Grau admitted running in the state cross country meet wasn’t necessarily on her mind.

LaVonne A. "Bonnie" Meyer

LaVonne “Bonnie” Adell Meyer, 88, of Giard, died Saturday, Oct. 31, 2020, at Gundersen Hospital in La Crosse, Wis. Bonnie was born Dec. 28, 1931, to Kenneth and Alberta (Huff) Cahoon on the family farm, rural McGregor. She attended the country school at Smokey Hollow near Effigy Mounds, then the school in Marquette and graduated from Monona High School in 1950.

Lavon Martins

Lavon Martins, 92, of Postville, died Friday, Oct. 30, 2020, at Good Samaritan Society in Waukon. Lavon was born Sept. 4, 1928, to Larry and Bessie (Segrist) Ewing in Franklin Township. She was baptized on April 17, 1938, and confirmed on Oct. 2, 1955. She attended Forest Mills Country School and graduated from Waukon High School.

Lavon was united in marriage with Virgil Walter Martins on Feb. 13, 1955, at Community Presbyterian Church in Postville. Lavon worked at Douglas Drug Store and was a farm wife. She enjoyed dancing, playing cards, having coffee with her sister, Lola, going to sales and doing ceramics. 

Surviving Lavon are many family members on both the Ewing and Martins side. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil; her parents, Larry and Bessie Ewing; and one sister, Lola Mork.

Record increase in COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations in Clayton County

Clayton County saw 156 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 over the past week, jumping from 421 on Oct. 26 to 577 by Nov. 2. That total has increased by 226 cases in the past two weeks, pushing the county’s 14-day positivity rate, which measures the percentage of positive tests in that span, to 22.9 percent—sixth worst in the state of Iowa.

The increase prompted the CEOs of Guttenberg Municipal Hospital & Clinics (GMHC) and MercyOne Elkader Medical Center, Tim Ahlers and Brooke Kensinger, to release a joint statement on Friday.

MFL MarMac students go ‘gaga’ over new physical education activity

“If the ball hits you below the knees, you’re out. That’s the number one rule,” physical education teacher Chet Bachman said of gaga ball. “You have to hit it open-handed, and you can even hit it with two hands, anywhere you want. You just can’t grab it. You can’t stop the ball and guide it, and you can’t kick it either.” Here, third grader Mia Kautman shows how it’s done.

MFL MarMac P.E. teacher Chet Bachman likes gaga ball because it’s fun, gets students physically activity and allows entire classes of any size to participate.

MFL MarMac third graders chant the words as physical education teacher Chet Bachman bounces a kickball three times, then lets it loose in a black-walled octagon set up on the stage in the high school gym. The students, spaced around the edge of the structure, jockey for position, hoping for a chance to smack the ball—or avoid being hit by it.

‘Get Your Jingle On’ event promotes holiday fun, shopping

Another shop and dine event is coming to Elkader. This time, it’s the newly-minted “Get Your Jingle On” that stretches over two-days—Friday and Saturday, Nov. 6 and 7—and includes a lighted walking parade that revolves around the Thomas Tree lighting ceremony. 

The event, according to Elkader Chamber Coordinator Ann Gibney, came about because the chamber board is “always looking at ideas to get people to come to our great town.” There are a slew of activities taking place Friday evening in an effort to encourage tourism and community involvement.

Stiemke joins McGregor Public Library as new children’s librarian

Luana Stiemke has joined the McGregor Public Library as its new children’s librarian. Stiemke takes over for Jane Lundquist, who retired last month after 15 years in the position.

The job is a perfect fit for Stiemke, who has a varied background that includes time as a teacher, daycare provider and parks and recreation employee.

“I was an assistant children’s librarian in Sparta, Wis., in the 1990s,” she said, “and it was one of my favorite jobs.”

Local Veterans Day observances planned

Despite the pandemic, area schools and organizations are still finding ways to honor local service members this Veterans Day. Listed below are events that were shared with the Times-Register.

MFL MarMac Community School

Join MFL MarMac for its annual Veterans Day Program, celebrated this year in a virtual setting. The event will premiere on the MFL MarMac YouTube and Facebook pages at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 10. After that, it will be available to watch any time.

The pre-recorded video will include the singing of the national anthem by the MFL MarMac senior choir ladies and a performance of “Song for the Mira” by the MFL MarMac choir.
