A rural Monona home has been labeled a complete loss, following a fire Jan. 4.

The Monona Fire Department was called to 13768 Golden Ave., east of Monona, at 9:55 a.m., for a report of a house fire. Firefighters arrived on scene to find the home completely engulfed, according to Monona Fire Chief Dave Smith. The home was being remodeled, and was not occupied at the time, he added.

Approximately 50 firefighters remained at the scene until noon, battling not just the blaze, but temperatures hovering around 0 degrees. Monona fire trucks could be seen making numerous trips back and forth to the site, transporting water.

Smith said the home is a complete loss. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Preparing for college can be tricky.

“You might be asking, ‘Am I ready for college? What do I do? What about schedules and ACT tests?’” remarked MFL MarMac High School Principal Larry Meyer.

In an effort to answer some of these important questions for current students, the school welcomed back 11 recent MFL MarMac graduates for a panel discussion.

Food for the weekends

Sixth through 12th graders benefit from BackPack Program

By Audrey Posten, North Iowa Times Editor

Thanks to volunteers from the churches in the McGregor Ecumenical Council, dozens of MFL MarMac students in junior kindergarten through fifth grade have had access to snack packs, gallon Ziploc bags filled with food that tide them over during weekends away from the school’s regularly-provided meals.

This fall, the school district partnered with the Northeast Iowa Food Bank to begin offering the BackPack Program, assuring students in sixth through 12th grades can now receive similar help.

Printing changes for the North Iowa Times

Change often comes with the arrival of a new year. So is the case with your hometown newspaper.

The North Iowa Times’ printing press and its associated technology have retired, meaning the newspaper is no longer printed at the Courier Press office in Prairie du Chien. Graphics Inc., of Calmar, which has printed The Trader weekly, along with many special sections for the North Iowa Times, has now taken on regular printing of the product.

With this transition, newsstand timing will be revised. Our goal is for each issue to be available for purchase on newsstands no later than 10 a.m. on Wednesdays. Subscribers’ newspapers should still arrive at the same time they did previously.

Eighth graders reflect on important life moments

By Audrey Posten, North Iowa Times Editor

As the year passes from one to the next, for many, it’s a time to reflect on what they believe in, to think about moments that have been important in their lives.

The eighth graders at MFL MarMac are no different. They’ve just put their thoughts into words by writing their own “This I Believe” essays and recording them for posterity.

“You have to write about what you believe in,” said Aidan Grove, simply explaining the premise of the assignment.

Start the new year with a hike at Pikes Peak

Join the staff and Friends of Pikes Peak State Park on a free, guided hike on New Year’s Day. Hikers can meet at 1 p.m., at the stone shelter in the park, for a one-mile hike led by park manager Matt Tschirgi.

“This is the seventh year the DNR is hosting First Day Hikes as part of an effort to get people outdoors and into our state parks,” said Todd Coffelt, chief of the DNR State Parks Bureau. “These hikes are a great way to get outside, exercise, enjoy nature and welcome the New Year with friends and family.”

Last year, more than 1,200 people began the year in an Iowa state park, hiking more than 1,100 total miles. This year, 25 state parks will host First Day Hikes.

Designing animal prosthetics, creating air drop packages to deliver food to disaster victims: these sound like activities conducted in high-tech laboratories. While that may be true, they’re also happening within the walls of the MFL MarMac McGregor Center, where students in the Talented and Gifted (TAG) program are taking on real-world engineering scenarios.

Around 40 students in fourth through eighth grade participate in the program, which gives them an opportunity to experience new learning challenges and think in ways they might not in the regular classroom.
