Walz Energy is facing a $10,000 penalty from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources for three separate violations that have occurred during construction of the 10,000-head cattle feedlot and biogas operation near Monona.

In a letter addressed to Walz Energy’s lawyer, Eldon McAfee, Iowa DNR Attorney Carrie Schoenebaum noted that Walz Energy had “engaged in an illegal discharge to a water of the state, violated its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit and its wastewater construction permit. These are violations the DNR takes very seriously.”

Hay Days to include tractor pull this year

By Audrey Posten, North Iowa Times

At its March 19 regular meeting, the Monona Council approved the closure of Egbert Street on Saturday, June 9, for a tractor pull, a new event at this year’s Hay Days celebration.

“We wanted something additional for Hay Days to create more traffic and bring extra people in,” said Jim Moritz, from FreedomBank, who discussed the idea with the council.

Moritz said several locations were considered for the tractor pull, but Egbert Street, in front of the community center, would work best due to its length and proximity to other Hay Days activities.

Crisis in EMS: Fewer EMTs, tight budgets leave volunteer services searching for solutions

By Audrey Posten, North Iowa Times

Life can change in an instant—an elderly parent falls at home, a wife or husband suffers a heart attack or stroke, a child is involved in a car accident. But what if, when someone calls 911, no ambulance arrives to assist them?

Unfortunately, that’s become a reality for many people across rural Iowa, as volunteer emergency medical services (EMS) struggle with tight budgets and a shrinking pool of EMTs.

Kip Ladage, Bremer County Emergency Management Coordinator, addressed this “crisis in EMS” earlier this month, during a program attended by EMS providers and community leaders from Clayton and surrounding counties.

Bee closing chapter at Murphy Helwig Library

Christine Bee will retire from Monona’s Murphy Helwig Library at the end of March, closing a 25-year chapter in which she served first as children’s librarian, then as the library’s director. (Photo by Audrey Posten)

Christine Bee has been a familiar face at Monona’s Murphy Helwig Library since 1993, when she took over as the children’s librarian.

“I’d been a library user my whole life, and I had always attended programs here with my children,” Bee said. “It just felt like home away from home.”

In 1997, Bee became the library’s director, a role through which she oversaw the library’s expansion, as well as countless technological advances. But, like all good stories, this one, too, must come to an end, as Bee enters the retirement chapter of her life at the beginning of April.

Looking back, Bee said she’s enjoyed embracing all the technological changes.

30th rendition of The Living Last Supper to be performed this weekend

Monona’s Living Faith United Methodist Church will present “The Living Last Supper” March 24 and 25, bringing to life the iconic Leonardo da Vinci painting that depicts the final meal Jesus shared with his apostles before his crucifixion. (Photos by Audrey Posten)

“What most of us feel is this is our opportunity every year for discipleship, an opportunity to share our faith with the community,” said Ric Benzing (center), who’s portrayed Jesus since 1992, but has been part of the cast since the production’s inception in 1989. He’s pictured here with Nathan Sandstrom (Peter), Scott Goltz (John), Greg Schiller (Thomas), Chris Hoffert (James the Elder) and Ed Klenk (Philip).

Denny Burton, who will again play Nathaniel, began participating in The Living Last Supper in 1998.

Monona’s Living Faith United Methodist Church will present its 30th rendition of “The Living Last Supper” this weekend, bringing to life the iconic Leonardo da Vinci mural painting that depicts the final meal Jesus shared with his apostles before his crucifixion.

The tradition was sparked by the church’s pastor at the time, Gary Dobbins, who’d seen it performed at a previous church.

“He thought it would be a good thing, and talked a bunch of guys into doing it,” recalled Ric Benzing, who’s the only original cast member still participating. He’s played Jesus since 1992.

Alpine expanding fiber-optic Fusion Network to Marquette, Pleasant Ridge area

After bringing fiber to McGregor (shown here) last year, Alpine Communications is now expanding its fiber-optic Fusion Network to the community of Marquette and the Pleasant Ridge neighborhood.

This map shows the area that will be part of the fiber-optic expansion.

Alpine Communications is making a major investment by expanding their 100 percent fiber-optic Fusion Network to the community of Marquette and the Pleasant Ridge Road neighborhood this year. The state-of-the-art Fusion Network will provide a fiber optic connection to all businesses and households within the city limits of Marquette and to customers in the Pleasant Ridge neighborhood.

This marks Alpine’s first major project to extend Fusion fiber-optics into its rural territory. The high demand for ultra-fast broadband services along with a digital television alternative is driving this investment.
