Wetlands Centre offers variety of programs to help youth connect with nature this summer

From dipping a net in the wetland and testing water quality to casting for trout and digging for dinosaur “fossils,” the Driftless Area Wetlands Centre in Marquette will offer countless opportunities for area youth to connect with nature this summer.

“We want to help kids learn how to love nature and the outdoors,” said Wetlands Centre Director Alicia Mullarkey. “We want to help them see what’s right outside their door and get them excited about what’s here.”

City of Monona turning over solid waste collection duties

Starting in July, Monona will turn over solid waste collection in the community from its own city workers to Town and Country Sanitation. 

The city council approved a contract with the Boscobel, Wis.-based company at its May 20 regular meeting.

Although pleased with the level of service the city has been able to provide residents and businesses, mayor Lynn “Marty” Martinson said the move will be more cost-effective in the long-run, saving on paying personnel, landfill fees, vehicle operation and repairs. The city, he noted, has also been unable to save enough over the last few years to replace the current garbage truck.

Softball team brings back five seniors

The MFL MarMac softball team returns seven starters from last year, which head coach Jerald Kleve said will be a huge strength this season. 

Of those seven, five are seniors: Hannah Schutte, Lizzie Herzmann, Keagan Moose, Kyleigh Picha and Jayde Schubert.

“They’ve been out all four years,” said Kleve. “That’s experience and the confidence level that will bring with that. That’s the biggest thing we have. The kids are comfortable.”

Kleve also values the insight he and new assistant coach Pat Wille can provide.

STEAM class engages students in new way

A STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) class offered at MFL MarMac Middle School has proved successful in its first year, largely by allowing students to follow their own interests.

Available to both seventh and eighth graders, STEAM developed from the “Day in the Life” activities held at the school the past few years, which gave kids a hands-on way to learn more about potential career fields.

Vote on new MFL MarMac fieldhouse could come as early as September

Residents of the MFL MarMac Community School District could vote as soon as September on the construction of a new fieldhouse at the Monona Center. The second Tuesday of that month is one of three options available for the district to hold an election over the next year; the other two are the November general election and the first Tuesday in March 2020.

“I’m just throwing it out there,” said superintendent Dale Crozier at the May 13 school board meeting. “I talked to our architect firm and they’re ready to go.”

The city of Marquette is moving forward with plans to create a campground next to the Driftless Area Wetlands Centre.

The city council, at its May 14 meeting, approved hiring an engineer to develop plans for the site and determine the cost and feasibility of adding water, sewer and electric.

City clerk Bonnie Basemann said the campground would start with 14 sites, but it was not yet determined how many would be seasonal or for daily use, or how much it would cost to rent a site. Restroom and shower facilities would also be available. 

Mayor Steve Weipert said he’d like to see an area for group tents, which the Wetlands Centre could use for programming.

Pump staying on McGregor's Main Street for time being

At its May 15 meeting, the McGregor Council approved an engineering contract with MSA Professional Services to develop concepts and a site plan for the splash pad project at Turner Park, as well as a combination restroom/concession stand.

Senior project manager Jake Deaver said the splash pad will be located behind the ballpark. It will have a flow-through, and not a recirculating, system.

Marquette farmers market begins May 24

The Marquette farmers market at the Driftless Area Wetlands Centre will open its season on Friday, May 24. It will be held every Friday night, from 4 to 7 p.m., through Oct. 4.  

This outdoor farmers market is complete with baked goods, fresh produce, honey, jams and jellies, eggs, black walnuts, maple syrup, locally produced beef and lamb products, granola, locally grown plants and local artisan vendors. 

Vendors currently include Kymar Acres, Busy Bee’s, Robert Jelinek, Highlandville Honey Farm, Elsinger Family Farms, BuckingLamb Palace and Cheryl Corlett.

MFL MarMac seniors Emma Ammons, Hannah Schutte and Summer Schutte capped off their high school track and field careers on a high note, competing in the state meet at Drake University in Des Moines on May 16-18.

There, Ammons threw a personal-best 112 feet, 3 inches in the discus, earning her 11th place in Class 1A. Hannah Schutte finished 14th in the 800 with a time of 2:29.59, besting her qualifying mark by several seconds. Summer Schutte ran a 27.62-second 200 meter dash to place 19th in the event.

The MFL MarMac baseball team will rely on an experienced pitching staff to reach the next level this season.

Ninety-seven percent of last year’s staff returns this summer, and all but one athlete has multiple years of varsity experience, according to head coach Brandon Burke. The leaders will include juniors Jackson Landt and Cedrick Drahn, senior Nathan Johanningmeier and sophomore Max Havlicek.

“All four of these guys have experienced success in the past and we are looking for them to be work horses on the mound,” said Burke, who’s entering his fourth season with the Bulldogs.
