Show support for Mar-Mac, PdC businesses through Santa Shops Small promotion

Small businesses in Marquette, McGregor and Prairie du Chien are once again collaborating this holiday season for a special promotion called Santa Shops Small.

Now in its second year, the event will reward shoppers who make purchases at participating small businesses from Nov. 30 to Dec. 24. Simply pick up a Santa Shops Small punch card and get a punch for every $10 you spend at a business. Once your card is full, drop it at the business where you’d like the opportunity to win a prize. Each participating business will have a $25 prize to give away.

Martinson declines second term as Monona mayor

Koenig has agreed to accept role

There will be no second term as Monona’s mayor for Lynn “Marty” Martinson. Despite receiving the most write-in votes (54) in the Nov. 5 city election, Martinson, who opted not to run again, has declined the position.

“I’m honored to be elected for a second term, however, my time and energy need to be devoted to my immediate family,” said Martinson, reading from a letter at the Nov. 18 city council meeting.

McGregor willing to donate lot for Lease Purchase Program

The city of McGregor has agreed to donate a lot in its Ohmer Ridge Subdivision for use in the Northeast Iowa Community Action Corporation’s (NEICAC) Lease Purchase Program. Similar to a Habitat for Humanity project, the program would allow a selected individual or family to “rent to own” a new home.

“We do construction, then rent a unit out for a period of two to three years before they buy the home,” explained NEICAC Housing Director Jeremy Jostand, who spoke at McGregor’s Nov. 20 council meeting.

MFL MarMac head coach Jason Winter is feeling both optimistic and excited heading into the 2019-2020 girls basketball season.

“I think this is a chance to have as good a year, if not better, than last year,” he said.

That’s saying a lot, considering the Bulldogs went 20-2 a season ago, winning the Upper Iowa Conference championship. The season ended abruptly, though, with an unexpected loss to conference foe South Winneshiek in the opening playoff game.

Bulldogs pick up slew of all-district honors

MFL MarMac was well represented on this year’s Class A District 5 all-district football teams. Dan Anderson was named coach of the year, and 16 players were recognized for their efforts.

Four Bulldogs were first team offense selections, including senior lineman Eli Johnson, who was deemed offensive MVP. The line was one of the team’s strongest suits this season, paving the way for the fifth ranked total offense in Class A. Also receiving honors were senior quarterback Cedrick Drahn, senior running back Kutter Anderson and senior kicker Jackson Landt.

Neil Hallberg

Neil Hallberg, 73, of Center Point, formerly of McGregor, died Friday, Nov. 8, 2019, at the Veteran’s Hospital in Iowa City. He was born April 3, 1946, in McGregor, to Henry and Marie (Bachtell) Hallberg. Neil was baptized July 14, 1946 and confirmed Aug. 26, 1962. He graduated from Mar-Mac High School in 1963. Neil served in the United States Army from 1965 to 1967. He served in Viet Nam.

Neil moved to Center Point, and was employed by Downing Box, later known as Longview Fiber, where he retired after many years. He was an avid bowler for years. He enjoyed watching sports, especially the Iowa Hawkeyes basketball and football teams and his St. Louis Cardinals baseball games. Neil loved playing cards.

Dorene Larson

Dorene Dorothy Larson, 81, of McGregor, died Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2019, at MercyOne Hospital in Dubuque. Dorene was born April 5, 1938, to Frederick and Florence (Meier) Becker on the family farm in McGregor. She attended Giard Country School and graduated from Monona High School. Dorene worked for REC in Postville before she was united in marriage with Harry Larson on Nov. 22, 1963, at Giard United Methodist Church in Giard. They moved to California while Harry served in the Navy. While in California, their first son was born. In 1965, they moved back to Iowa, where Harry and Dorene had three additional children. Dorene enjoyed being a farm wife and homemaker, and enjoyed cooking, baking and helping in the fields. She sold Tupperware and worked as a cook for the Mar-Mac Schools.

Book club helps staff forge reading connections with students

MFL MarMac staff members are forging new connections with one another, as well as their students, through participation in a monthly book club.

Now in its third year, the club was the brainchild of the district’s teacher-librarian, Melissa Haberichter.

“I was in the process of upping the volume of reading at the high school. With school and the business of life, reading just didn’t feel as important to them,” she said. “But there were kids who missed it and wanted it.”

Monona Guesthouse fills community’s lodging void

The 1927 Dutch Colonial home, which has three bedrooms and one and one-half baths, is located on West Center Street.

Rogeta Halvorson, executive director of Monona Chamber and Economic Development, Inc., expects the Monona Guesthouse to attract tourists and corporate travelers, as well as people who are in town for funerals, family gatherings, holidays, class reunions and Hay Days.

The Monona Guesthouse, a three-bedroom, one and one-half bath home, was listed on the vacation rental websites Airbnb and VRBO in October, filling what Monona Chamber and Economic Development, Inc. (MCED), Executive Director Rogeta Halvorson said was a major lodging void in the community.

“We knew there was a huge need,” commented Halvorson, who’s made adding lodging a goal since she joined MCED five years ago. “Without a place to stay in town—and Monona had zero—it’s hard to grow this area and bring new people in. And even if it’s not tourism, it’s people inside town who are saying ‘This is so great for Monona. My family comes and now they have a place to stay.’”
