Mar-Mac Police Department shares 2019 annual report

Mar-Mac Police Chief Robert Millin recently presented the law enforcement district’s 2019 annual report to both the Marquette and McGregor city councils, sharing the “behind the scenes” of the department, its personnel, daily activities, comparisons to previous years and more.

The latest U.S. Census records place McGregor’s and Marquette’s combined population at 1,295 people. However, said Millin, due to the police district’s geographic location, in close proximity to Prairie du Chien, local employers, tourist attractions and a state and federal highway, that population swells each day.

Corps of Engineers monitors high water on Upper Mississippi River

Flows at levels normally observed in late spring

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is monitoring high water conditions affecting parts of the Upper Mississippi River in Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa as a result of historic flows this winter.

The Corps urges the public to remain vigilant for river flooding. Cities from Winona, Minn., to Guttenberg have an increased chance of localized flooding due to ice dams. 

According to the National Weather Service at La Crosse, as of Tuesday, Jan. 28, the Mississippi was at 13.5 feet at McGregor. The current river flows are at levels normally observed in late spring.

Plan proposed to pave original sections of Monona’s Butterfly Trail

A plan has been proposed to pave the two original sections of Monona’s Butterfly Trail. 

People like the ease of traveling on the newer paved portion that stretches from the Butterfly Garden to Gateway Park, volunteer Jim Langhus told the city council at its Jan. 20 meeting, so the Butterfly Garden and Trail Committee hopes to improve accessibility on the older stretch.

Langhus said the first portion of the Butterfly Trail was put in 20 years ago and the second part 10 years ago. They’re a combined 5,100 feet in length—nearly one mile.

Bring your appetite, but leave your politics behind, this Saturday, Feb. 1, to caucus for your favorite cookies and casseroles.

McGregor businesses Paper Moon and By the Spoonful are teaming up to host a tasty event based on the new book “The Great Iowa Caucus Casserole Mystery,” available now at Paper Moon.

Written by Iowa author Rae Katherine Eighmey, the short mystery is set in a small Iowa town at the time of the state’s first-in-the-nation caucuses.

Shirley Ellis

Shirley E. Ellis, age 78, of Patch Grove, Wis., passed away Sunday, Jan. 19, 2020, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Shirley was born on April 12, 1941, the daughter of Roy and Edna (Jarms) Haberichter. Shirley, her father and her grandmother were all born in the same farmhouse located southeast of Monona. Shirley spent her early childhood in Clayton County, moved to the Patch Grove area in 1952 and graduated from Patch Grove High School in 1958. She married Jerry Ellis on Oct. 24, 1959, at the Zion Lutheran Church in Bagley, Wis. Shirley and Jerry raised their family in the home that he built in 1960. Shirley was Patch Grove Village Clerk for 18 years and secretary/treasurer for the Patch Grove Fire Department for 31 years. Shirley enjoyed time spent with her family, reading, sewing, gardening and dancing with Jerry.

Iowa Caucuses less than two weeks away

After months of anticipation, the Iowa Caucuses are now less than two weeks away. Both Democratic and Republican voters from across the state will venture to their respective local precincts on Monday, Feb. 3, to participate in an event that, since 1972, has been the first primary season test for presidential candidates seeking their party’s nomination.

“It’s a time to gather and show your support for a candidate,” said Brian Bruening, chair of the Clayton County Democrats.

Fitness classes help seniors stay active

Live 2 B Healthy attendees like Esther Werges utilize bands, balls and other methods to stretch, lift and bend their way to better health. The goal is to improve balance, flexibility and strength.

Have a Heart Day brightens smiles for 30 years

Family Dentistry Associates of Monona will hold its annual Have a Heart Day on Saturday, Feb. 8, giving local kids ages 4 to 18 who haven’t recently seen a dentist an opportunity to receive free dental care. “We saw a need,” said Dr. Mark Fohey of how the event started 30 years ago. “It was something we could provide to the area to give back.” (Submitted photo)

Family Dentistry Associates of Monona will hold its annual Have a Heart Day on Saturday, Feb. 8, giving local kids ages 4 to 18 who haven’t recently seen a dentist an opportunity to receive free dental care. 

The event, inspired by an idea Family Chiropractic Associates brought to Waukon, dates back to 1990. Both Family Dentistry and its sister clinic, Waukon Dental, have offered the service for 30 years, while Dental Associates of Prairie du Chien has taken part since opening 25 years ago.

“We saw a need,” said Dr. Mark Fohey. “It was something we could provide to the area to give back.”

Shirley Guyer

Shirley Jean Guyer, 79, of Luana, passed Jan. 14, 2020. She was born Sept. 29, 1940, to Henry Paul William Mueller and Viola Clarice (Thompson) Mueller. Shirley went to a one-room country school near St. Olaf for kindergarten through sixth grade. She attended seventh through 12th grades at the Luana High School and graduated in the class of 1959. 

Shirley married Harold LeRoy Guyer on Oct. 5, 1963. After marriage, she lived on a farm near West Union as a farm wife, then moved back to her home farm by Luana in 1971. She worked a summer at the Elgin Corn Factory, and also loved working at the McGregor Ceramic Shop for 17 years before retiring in 1995.
