MFL MarMac will roll out ‘educational opportunities’ for students this week

MFL MarMac and other school districts across Iowa will not have to make up the instructional hours they have—and will—miss while closed until April 13 due to COVID-19.

Whether that closure is extended is yet to be known, said superintendent Dale Crozier, “but that’s the time frame we’re looking at now.”

Over the past week, Crozier said he’s met regularly with the state’s department of education, Keystone Area Education Agency and other local superintendents to navigate the district through these uncharted waters.

“We have to be able to move right and left and adapt constantly,” he noted. “I haven’t had a chance to stop, or to think about stopping.”

Food Shelf remains open, with precautions in place

Many local entities have closed or limited their hours over the past week due to the spread of COVID-19, but the Clayton County Food Shelf isn’t one of them. The social service remains open its regular hours, Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m.

But director Utoni Ruff is taking social distancing precautions to protect both herself and the food shelf’s patrons.

Cities make adjustments in response to COVID-19

Marquette and McGregor city offices remain closed to the public until further notice, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Personnel will continue to be on site, performing regular duties, though. If a McGregor resident has business that requires contact, they are welcome to call (563) 873-3795 or email citymcgr@mchsi.com, and business will still be handled in a proficient manner.

Mar-Mac Police taking protective measures

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Mar-Mac Police Department has implemented temporary procedures—and officers are doing everything they can—to keep the public, their fellow officers and themselves healthy and safe.

Last week, Mar-Mac Police Chief Robert Millin announced that, in non-emergency incidents, officers will be handling reports by phone. If residents call for assistance, please be aware you may be contacted by an officer to determine if the situation can be handled by phone.

Jean Lenore Wiedenmann, 88, of Monona, died Monday, March 16, 2020, at Northgate Care Center in Waukon. Jean was born Nov. 1, 1931, on the family farm near Waterville, to Ben and Hulda Kolsrud. She was baptized and confirmed at Old East Paint Creek Lutheran Church in Waterville. Jean was a member of Faith Lutheran N.A.L.C. Church in Monona.

Sandra Pauline Schlitter

Sandra Pauline Schlitter, 71, of McGregor, died Saturday, March 14, 2020, at Mayo Health Systems in La Crosse, Wis. Sandra Pauline was born Nov. 20, 1948, to Harvey and Carlotta (Moen) Standorf in McGregor. She attended country school through the eighth grade and then attended Mar-Mac Community School. 

Sandra was united in marriage with Frank Schlitter on Aug. 18, 1984, at Giard Methodist Church in Giard. She helped on the farm alongside her husband, Frank.  Her hobbies included crafting, doing jigsaw puzzles, baking, cooking and listening to country and gospel music. Sandra enjoyed working in the sunshine while gardening, tending to her flowers and mowing the lawn.

Coronavirus impact felt locally

In the matter of just a week, daily life for Clayton County residents has changed drastically due to the threat of the novel coronavirus. Schools and public offices have shuttered, health care facilities have restricted visitors, and many events and social gatherings have been canceled or postponed in an effort to curb potential transmission.

As of Monday night, March 16, Iowa had 23 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including two reported Sunday from Allamakee County. According to the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), one individual is a middle-age adult between 41 and 60 years old, while the second is a child under 18. Both cases are related to international travel.

Work on Marquette-Joliet Bridge starts March 23

Late last week, motorists crossing the Marquette-Joliet Bridge were greeted with signs warning of upcoming construction. Extensive work on the bridge is set to begin on Monday, March 23, and could take up to seven months to complete.

Work on the Marquette-Joliet Bridge connecting Marquette and Prairie du Chien is set to begin Monday, March 23.

According to a project proposal from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT), work will include deck and parapet repairs, new pavement and guardrail replacement, as well as pier and abutment repairs on the bridge’s underside. 

In communication with the city of Marquette, the DOT said the project is anticipated to take up to seven months to complete.

Crawford County Highway Commissioner Kyle Kozelka said motorists should expect lane closures and delays. The Sturgeon Slough parking lot between the Iowa and Wisconsin portions of the bridge will be closed to the public so equipment can park there.
