The Central football season ended in a heartbreakingly close 62-60 loss to the Central City Wildcats on Oct. 15. The game, which was originally scheduled for earlier in the year, served as the season finale when Central opted out of the playoffs, a decision that was made without player involvement. It was a decision the players understood, but were still disappointed by. Heading into the game, the team seemed ready.

“We feel good, we’re playing loose and excited. It’s the seniors’ last game, so emotions will be high, which is good because I know that they will bring the excitement,” head coach Joe Koehn said beforehand.

The MFL MarMac cross country team competed in the Upper Iowa Conference meet at North Fayette Valley on Oct. 15, where three runners—Clare Grau, Kaylee Walch and Caleb Nordheim—turned in all-conference performances.

“The weather conditions were less than ideal, mainly the wind being the negative factor,” said head coach Eric Koenig, “but even with that the kids turned in good performances.”

Elkader Vet Clinic owners Michelle Christianson and Ryan Royer recently purchased the Valley Veterinary Clinic in Elgin, a decision Valley’s former owner, Steven Carlson, said was mutual and has been beneficial for all involved.

It all started when Valley, a two-doctor practice, saw one of its doctors retire, leaving Carlson pulling double duty. In May 2020, he approached Royer about the option to buy the clinic in Elgin and, by August, Royer and Christianson were the new owners.

Meet the Candidates: Clayton County Sheriff

Mike Tschirgi (R)

By Audrey Posten, Times-Register

“I’ve always liked helping people.”

For Clayton County Sheriff Mike Tschirgi, that’s why he entered the law enforcement profession 30 years ago, and why he’s seeking a fourth term as the county’s top cop.

This year’s consideration to run admittedly came with a new challenge.

“When I took out my papers, we had just heard about COVID-19, and I thought, ‘What am I getting into?’” noted Tschirgi, a Republican who’s running unopposed in the Nov. 3 general election.

Support The Left Bank and get opportunity to win piece of art through raffle

Seven pieces of art, each donated by one of The Left Bank Shop and Gallery’s regional artists, are available through the raffle. Funds from the effort will help insure the continued operation of The Left Bank, located in McGregor, through the COVID-19 pandemic. (Photo by Audrey Posten)

There’s less than one week left to purchase “Save the Bank” raffle tickets in support of The Left Bank Shop and Gallery in McGregor. For a small fee, the raffle tickets give buyers an opportunity to win a one-of-a-kind piece of art created by one of The Left Bank’s regional artists.

In addition to a small business government loan and appeals to friends of the art center, the raffle is one way the McGregor-Marquette Center for the Arts (MMCA) Board of Directors is seeking financial help to insure the continued operation of The Left Bank through the COVID-19 pandemic.
