Lesson to go bags make virtual learning days fun for MFL MarMac second graders

MFL MarMac second grade teachers Katie Kregel (left), Dacia Jacobsen and Eva Swatek are pictured with some of the STEM lesson to go bags that have gone home with students. During some of their Wednesday virtual learning days, the teachers and students complete the hands-on activities together, over Zoom. (Submitted photos)

Second graders in Mrs. Swatek’s class show off the geo domes they created. Peggy Schilling, who handles school-based and summer youth development programming for Clayton County Extension, finds, plans and prepares the activities. They are often related to second grade science and math standards.

For one activity, students sorted seeds into fliers, rollers and hitchhikers. Teachers said the projects have been a hit.

MFL MarMac’s second grade teachers have partnered with Clayton County’s ISU Extension and Outreach Office to offer hands-on, educational activities for students on the district’s Wednesday virtual learning days.

“Over the summer, I was doing lesson to go bags,” said Peggy Schilling, who handles school-based and summer youth development programming for Clayton County Extension. “I was looking at MFL MarMac’s school schedule and saw they were not going on Wednesdays. I’ve worked with [teacher] Katie Kregel, who checks out our STEM Lit-Go kits every year, and asked if there were some little activities they wanted to try.”

Central senior earns prestigious All-State Choir honor

Central senior Brenna Buckman has been selected as a member of the 2020 All-State Chorus, the highest individual honor available to Iowa high school vocal musicians.

When she was selected as a member of the 2020 All-State Chorus, Brenna Buckman was “so beyond excited!” The Central senior, having achieved the highest individual honor available to Iowa high school vocal musicians, understood the gravity of the accolade and felt the pride that comes with it. Pride in the prestigious nature of what occurred, and the exclusivity of the honor bestowed upon her, as being selected is no easy feat.

In fact, it’s a rarity for Central and 1A schools in general, as only 6 to 7 percent of those selected were from 1A schools, and Buckman was the only student who made the cut from 1A schools in northeast Iowa. She is Central’s first selection since 2012.

The Central girls basketball team headed into the season looking to repeat last year’s success and, early on, it’s gone well. Going into this past week, the Warriors were looking to test themselves against some stiff competition and finished the week 2-1, defeating West Central and Kee, before dropping their first game of the year against Springville.

After the week of play, coach Mark Wiley remarked “We still need to finish better around the rim. As coaches, we have to implement time in practice to work on these fundamental things of shooting and footwork, even in the paint.”

Aside from the shooting, the Warriors played a complete game, overwhelming the Blue Devils on the boards with a 34-21 rebound advantage, to go along with 16 assists and eight steals.

Bulldogs cap dominant week by taking top spot at Cascade Dual Tournament

MFL MarMac junior Gabe McGeough is off to a strong start this season, winning all seven of his matches so far—six of them by fall. Here, he pinned Starmont’s Keegan McTaggart in the home dual meet Dec. 3. (Photos by Audrey Posten)

Several Bulldog freshmen, including Konnor Barat-Klimesh, were big contributors in last week’s success. Barat-Klimesh earned a fall over Riceville’s Will Felper in his first match Dec. 3.

Senior heavyweight Jacob Trudo worked out of the grasp of Riceville's Mitchel Marr on his way to hard-fought pin early in the dual last Thursday night.

132-pound freshman Bryce Radloff won his first high school match by fall.

It was a dominant first week of action for the MFL MarMac wrestling team, which won two duals in a Dec. 3 home meet, then cruised to a first-place finish in the Cascade Dual Tournament the following night.

“You couldn’t ask for a better week,” said head coach Chet Bachman. “The kids wrestled well and took care of their matches. When they won, they usually won by fall.”

With COVID-19 making every day of wrestling an uncertainty, he was even more excited.

The Central wrestling season got off to a rough start last week, with the Warriors dropping all five of their duals.

“We are a young team trying to find ourselves. Our struggles are just fixing the simple things right now…[we] just need to do one thing at a time and don’t worry about getting the cart ahead of the horse,” said coach Joe Koehn.

The week began with a meet at Hudson on Dec. 1, where Central faced the Hudson Pirates and Wapsie Valley Warriors. Against the Pirates, the Warriors lost 72-9, with Nick Deitchler securing the only victory via fall, while teammate Spencer Heer won an 8-7 decision.
