Pandemic pushes MFL MarMac to increase its digital presence

Since the start of the pandemic, MFL MarMac has increased its digital presence. Cheri Moser, shown here with her home office setup, has helped with marketing and promotion. (Submitted photos)

A video highlighting student Keaton Warrington, who did a virtual presentation to his class about his dad’s service in the Navy, is one example of the engaging posts shared on the MFL MarMac Facebook page.

Live stream events have been one of the district’s biggest and most popular undertakings. This screengrab shows the camera set up in the auditorium for the high school winter concert.

When the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to close last spring, districts around the country began devising ways to stay connected with students, parents and their communities.

MFL MarMac was no different. A committee planned teacher car parades, socially distanced window scavenger hunts and weekly spirit activities.

“There were so many ideas floating around,” recalled the district’s teacher librarian, Melissa Haberichter, who was part of the group.

Monona sets 2021 goals

By Audrey Posten, Times-Register

Trail updates, sewer maintenance and property annexation are among the goals the city of Monona has for 2021. City administrator Barb Collins proposed the objectives—some of which are holdovers from previous years—at the city council’s Jan. 4 meeting.

This year, thanks in large part to a REAP grant, Monona will extend its Butterfly Trail from Gateway Park to the intersection of Main and Spruce streets. The extension will improve access to and from Gateway Park’s campsites and new playground. Once the recreational trail plans are completed, Collins said the city will know how much it will have to contribute toward the project.

Elkader City Council discusses department budgets

By Willis Patenaude, Times-Register

The Jan. 11 Elkader City Council meeting focused chiefly on budget updates concerning public works, water works, the police department and the library.

Before deep diving into the weeds of financial matters, there has been a surprise departure, as Ashley Althoff, just a month after taking over as economic development and Main Street Iowa director, has left the position. The departure was confirmed by city administrator Jennifer Cowsert, who could not offer any specific details, instead simply stating that she has “met with the Main Street Board and [they] are moving ahead to re-advertise the position and hopefully have someone on board by the end of February.”

The MFL MarMac boys basketball team entered play last week on a three-game winning streak, but failed to keep the momentum alive in losses to Clayton Ridge and North Fayette Valley.

The 48-44 loss to Clayton Ridge on Jan. 5 was especially tough. The Bulldogs raced ahead 17-4 in the first quarter and maintained a 25-13 lead into halftime. Warrior wrestling is still a work in progress

By Willis Patenaude, Times-Register

It was a busy week for the Central wrestling program, with a girls meet at Anamosa, a dual at Riceville and hosting the Central Invitational.

The girls took center stage at Anamosa, as Maria Medberry and Rebecca Suhr represented the school well. Medberry placed second in the 139-pound bracket, going 2-1 with two falls, and Suhr placed third at 147 pounds, going 1-2 with one fall.

One of Medberry’s falls took only 12 seconds over Addison Juhl from Waverly-Shell Rock and Suhr’s lone fall came in a swift 20 seconds over Corrigan Wilson from Marion.
