After visioning process, McGregor and Marquette aim to narrow in on projects

The most ambitious of the Iowa’s Living Roadways Community Visioning projects is a joint effort between Marquette and McGregor: a long-sought riverside connection dubbed the Ports of Discovery Riverfront Trail. (Images courtesy of Jeffrey L. Bruce & Company)

One item included in Marquette’s signage and way-finding concepts was a proposed archway over the riverfront pier.

Park improvements were a focus in McGregor. A proposed project at Triangle Park would expand the park plaza.

Pedestrian safety and walkability would be addressed in a proposed First Street project in Marquette. At the intersection with the U.S. Highway 18 on/off ramp, cross walks, a reconfigured pedestrian crossing island and half wall were suggested to provide protection.

A revitalized Peace Park would serve as a robust gateway to McGregor, tap into the community's history and improve traffic flow on that portion of Main Street.

One proposed project would create a rest area at the Marquette Depot Museum and Information Center property, to further grab the attention of passersby. The rest area would include a restroom building, increased parking, open-air shelter with picnic table seating, a boardwalk extending into a mitigated wetland area, interpretive signage and walkways connecting the elements.

Through McGregor’s visioning process, identity and way-finding were among the goals, as were safety and accessibility. This includes potentially constructing a pedestrian bridge across the railroad tracks to provide a safe, accessible path to the riverfront.
