Effigy Mounds National Monument education park ranger Brian Gibbs, pictured with son Ollie, was one of 1,000 National Park Service probationary employees terminated on Feb. 14. The move has left Gibbs, who called the position a dream job, with sadness and confusion. (Photo courtesy of Brian Gibbs)
Brian Gibbs was in an education and interpretation position at Effigy Mounds National Monument, work that included interacting with students and leading park tours. “These are places where we, throughout generations, make core memories. As a federal civil servant of the National Park Service, that’s part of my job—to protect and preserve these memory-making places so they don’t get vandalized, so they don’t get looted. So people can learn about them and make their own emotional and intellectual connections, so they can bond with them and advocate for them as well,” Gibbs reflected. (Photo courtesy of Brian Gibbs)
Brian Gibbs, also a talented photographer and writer, penned a heartfelt letter on his personal Facebook page detailing his termination and his role as an environmental educator and steward of public lands. The post has since gone viral, and Gibbs has spoken to numerous national news outlets about his experience. (Photo courtesy of Brian Gibbs)
