Bulldogs win three more duals, place second at Nashua-Plainfield Tourney

The MFL MarMac wrestling team continued to perform well last week, winning three more duals and placing second at the Nashua-Plainfield Tournament.

The three dual victories came in a meet at Edgewood-Colesburg on Dec. 8. The Bulldogs started the night by defeating a tough Beckman-Catholic squad 44-36.

“They took care of us pretty good last year, and they’ve got some good kids who’ll be right there at the end,” said head coach Chet Bachman. “So it was nice to beat them.”

MFL MarMac girls basketball team off to 4-1 start

Sophomore Grace Anderson, in her first game back from an injury, provided a spark off the bench in MFL MarMac’s win over West Central, with 14 points and four rebounds.

Last week, Carlie Jones and the Bulldog defense were able to hold off a pesky West Central team, winning 33-26.

Two weeks into the season, the MFL MarMac girls basketball team is 4-1, but head coach Jason Winter said there’s still room for improvement.

“Almost every one of our games has been pretty close,” he said. “Right now, we’re kind of playing to the level of our competition.”

After a big season-opening win over Turkey Valley, the Bulldogs started the second week of play Dec. 7, against Edgewood-Colesburg. MFL MarMac jumped out to a 28-18 advantage over the Vikings in the first half, but Ed-Co chipped away at the lead in the third quarter, making it 37-30. The Bulldogs held them off in the fourth period, though, winning 50-42.

Central boys drop two games

It was another tough week for the Central boys basketball team, as they dropped both games and fell to 1-4 on the year. 

In the first game of the week, the Warriors took on Clayton Ridge, losing 67-49 after falling behind early. The Warriors shot 35.3 percent from the field, which was bested by the Eagles’ 51.8 percent performance. In other statistical categories, such as rebounds, free throws, assists and steals, the Warriors kept pace, but they also committed 12 turnovers and 14 fouls. From behind the arc, the team went just 9 for 26. 

Evan Pensel led the Warriors in points with 14, followed by Dan McGreal with 13 and Parker Vaughn with eight. Ashton Burroughs came off the bench for six.

MFL MarMac grabs first win

Senior Cayden Ball had a big week for MFL MarMac, scoring 21 points at South Winn, followed by a 13-point output against West Central.

After tough losses to Edgewood-Colesburg and South Winneshiek earlier in the week, the MFL MarMac boys basketball team cruised past Upper Iowa Conference opponent West Central Friday night, picking up its first win of the season.

The Bulldogs began last week’s action on Dec. 7, dropping a match-up with Ed-Co 75-40. The Vikings jumped ahead 18-11 in the first quarter, then went on a 16-6 run in the second period to take a 34-17 lead into halftime. The second half didn’t get much better for the Bulldogs, who struggled to contain the Ed-Co offense, which rattled off 33 points in the third quarter alone.

Young Warrior wrestling team has some success

The Central wrestling squad showed improvement this past week, performing well in the JV boys/girls quad at Center Point-Urbana on Dec. 8, while the varsity team went 1-2, winning their first match-up of the young season. 

At the JV portion of the meet, Maria Medberry went 2-1, winning the first place matches in the 131-138- and 126-138-pound weight classes. She won both via pin, while fellow female teammates went 1-4. Brandy Beatty lost both of her matches via fall, but Rebecca Suhr won the first-place match for the 143-152 class by pin. Meanwhile, Nate Shirbroun, the lone male wrestler for Central, won both first place matches for the 170-175 and 170-182 weight classes.

The Central girls basketball team headed into the season looking to repeat last year’s success and, early on, it’s gone well. Going into this past week, the Warriors were looking to test themselves against some stiff competition and finished the week 2-1, defeating West Central and Kee, before dropping their first game of the year against Springville. 

After the week of play, coach Mark Wiley remarked “We still need to finish better around the rim. As coaches, we have to implement time in practice to work on these fundamental things of shooting and footwork, even in the paint.”

The Central boys basketball season got off to a big start against the West Central Blue Devils on Dec. 1, as the Warriors dominated in a 57-32 victory, holding the Blue Devils to less than 10 points in each of the first three periods. 

As a team, the Warriors shot 39.7 percent from the field, making 23 of 58 shots, and from long range they went 10 for 26. More than half of the team’s 57 points came from three pointers. 

Aside from the shooting, the Warriors played a complete game, overwhelming the Blue Devils on the boards with a 34-21 rebound advantage, to go along with 16 assists and eight steals.

Bulldogs cap dominant week by taking top spot at Cascade Dual Tournament

Several Bulldog freshmen, including Konnor Barat-Klimesh, were big contributors in last week’s success. Barat-Klimesh earned a fall over Riceville’s Will Felper in his first match Dec. 3.

Senior heavyweight Jacob Trudo worked out of the grasp of Riceville's Mitchel Marr on his way to hard-fought pin early in the dual last Thursday night.

132-pound freshman Bryce Radloff won his first high school match by fall.

It was a dominant first week of action for the MFL MarMac wrestling team, which won two duals in a Dec. 3 home meet, then cruised to a first-place finish in the Cascade Dual Tournament the following night.

“You couldn’t ask for a better week,” said head coach Chet Bachman. “The kids wrestled well and took care of their matches. When they won, they usually won by fall.”

With COVID-19 making every day of wrestling an uncertainty, he was even more excited.

Brandon Whittle wrestled hard in a home dual meet on Dec. 3, in which the Warriors hosted Ed-Co, Postville and West Delaware.

The Central wrestling season got off to a rough start last week, with the Warriors dropping all five of their duals. 

“We are a young team trying to find ourselves. Our struggles are just fixing the simple things right now…[we] just need to do one thing at a time and don’t worry about getting the cart ahead of the horse,” said coach Joe Koehn.

The week began with a meet at Hudson on Dec. 1, where Central faced the Hudson Pirates and Wapsie Valley Warriors. Against the Pirates, the Warriors lost 72-9, with Nick Deitchler securing the only victory via fall, while teammate Spencer Heer won an 8-7 decision.

MFL MarMac snags win over Turkey Valley

The MFL MarMac girls basketball team kicked off its season Dec. 1, snagging a 46-38 victory at Turkey Valley. 

The Bulldogs led the Trojans 8-5 through the first quarter, then broke it open in the second, going on an 18-4 run to claim a 26-9 halftime advantage. Turkey Valley cut into the lead in the third quarter, though, making it 35-25. The Trojans also out-scored the Bulldogs 13-11 in the fourth quarter, but couldn’t overcome the early deficit, losing by eight points.
