The MFL MarMac boys basketball team went 1-1 last week, breezing past Postville before losing a hard-fought thriller to Turkey Valley.

The Bulldogs faced the winless Pirates Jan. 11, taking the game easily, 62-31. They jumped out to a 20-9 lead in the first quarter alone, and only increased the advantage to 32-17 at halftime. The MFL MarMac defense then held Postville to just 14 combined points in the third and fourth periods, en route to the 31-point victory.

MFL MarMac shot nearly 44 percent in the game and drained 10 of 26 attempts from behind the arc. The Bulldogs also got to the free throw line nearly twice as often as Postville and won the rebounding and turnover battles.

Season lows in scoring and shooting plague Warriors in loss at West Central

By Willis Patenaude, Times-Register

It was a game of statistical lows Jan. 12, as the Central girls basketball team suffered a stunning 39-18 defeat against West Central.

The Warriors put up a season-low 18 points against a team they defeated 65-33 earlier in the season. They scored fewer than six points in all four periods.

The team converted just six of 56 field goal opportunities, shooting 10.7 percent from the floor—25 percent lower than West Central.

It was even worse from three-point distance, where the Warriors made just one shot out of 24 attempts.

McGeough, Mathis lead MFL MarMac to second place at Bulldog Invite

Sophomore Karter Decker (138 pounds) continued to wrestle well on Saturday, earning second place at the MFL MarMac Invitational.

The Bulldogs have gotten a lift—sometimes literally—from a strong group of freshmen, including 132-pound Bryce Radloff. He finished third at Saturday’s tournament.

Holden Mathis, wrestling at 120 pounds, was another freshman who placed third.

Tristen Koehn, seen here pinning a Waterloo West wrestler, got redemption in Saturday's third-place match, winning by fall over Saint Ansgar’s Derek Peterson, who’d pinned him to start the day.

Gabe McGeough was the 160-pound champion. The junior has dominated throughout the season, losing just once.

The MFL MarMac wrestling team continued its string of strong tournament performances on Jan. 16, placing second in the MFL MarMac Invitational. The Bulldogs scored 193 total points, trailing only Crestwood, which finished the day with 285. Wapsie Valley scored 149 points, placing third in the eight-team field.

Leading the Bulldogs were juniors Gabe McGeough and Kashton Mathis, who were tournament champions in their respective 160-pound and 145-pound classes.

“Gabe dominated,” said head coach Chet Bachman, while Mathis bounced back from a tough previous week. “He didn’t do well the week before, but it just shows that, if you have a good mind set and a good week of practice, you can flip the page.”
