Nine Bulldog wrestlers advance to districts, team wins sectional title


The MFL MarMac wrestling team placed first at the Class 1A sectional in Monona, while nine individuals finished first or second to advance to districts. Come-from-behind win over Central clinches conference title for MFL MarMac

Central wrestling season ends at sectionals

Sean Wilwert went 2-1 at sectionals, placing third at 170 pounds.

Nate Shirbroun, at 182 pounds, was one of three Central wrestlers to place third at sectionals—and just shy of advancing to districts.

106-pounder Reese Berns wrestled to a fourth place finish.

Nick Deitchler was fourth at 132 pounds.

Sanctioned: Wrestling becomes Iowa's 11th girls sport


The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Board of Directors has voted unanimously to sanction girls wrestling as the organization’s 11th sport. The news was welcome at MFL MarMac and Central, who are among the 185 Iowa schools where girls are participating in high school wrestling. Four Bulldog wrestlers are individual conference champs

Coach Chet Bachman called Keith Anderson’s 113-pound championship match the “most special win of the night.”

Tristen Koehn carried a recent string of tournament and dual success into conference, taking the top spot at 145 pounds.

Kashton Mathis, who Bachman said is riding a lot of momentum, placed first at 170 pounds.

Gabe McGeough continued his impressive senior season with a conference championship at 152 pounds.

Freshman TJ Coleman placed fifth at 106 pounds, in what was his first tournament of the season.

Andrew Heins (126 pounds) was one of six Bulldogs who placed second at the UIC tournament.

Holden Mathis wrestled his way to second place at 132 pounds.

Quinn McGeough came in third at 160.

Austin Schlee worked his way up to second in the 182-pound bracket.
