Four Bulldogs earn all-conference honors

Four MFL MarMac boys basketball players have earned Upper Iowa all-conference honors. Juniors Cedrick Drahn and Tyler Kurth were named to the first team, while senior Sam Koeller and junior Caden Stuckman received honorable mention status.

Kurth was a strong inside presence for the Bulldogs, finishing the season with a remarkable eight double-doubles. He averaged a team-high 15.6 points per game and had a 59.9 field goal percentage. His 9.5 rebounds per game and 13 blocks were also tops on the team. He was second in steals, with 26.

Senior wrestlers all place at state

In his last state match, Egan tied the MFL MarMac record for 171 career victories.

Michael Egan earned a fifth-place finish in Class 1A at 145 pounds.

“It means a lot to look back on it, to say you won all these matches, all these big things,” said Egan of his time wrestling for MFL MarMac. “It’s a testament to the hard work you had to put in. It takes a lot of work to get to where we got this year.”

Johanningmeier finished his career with over 150 wins.

Nathan Johanningmeier wrestled into sixth place at 182 pounds in Class 1A.

Johanningmeier felt he wrestled best after his second-round loss. “I felt like I wrestled my best, just coming off that loss and knowing I had to win again to be able to place,” he said.

In addition to his superb season record, Keehner also finished with over 140 career victories. He broke MFL MarMac’s season record for pins, with 37.

Garret Keehner placed third at 220 pounds in Class 1A.

Keehner went to the tournament a perfect 44-0—the first time any Bulldog has gone to state without a single loss. But he tried to keep that out of his mind as he competed. “I didn’t want to jinx myself right away and end up going home with two losses and no medal. So I went in open-minded,” Keehner remarked

Three MFL MarMac wrestlers came away from last week’s state wrestling tournament in Des Moines with medals. A Class 1A third-place finish for Garret Keehner at 220 pounds, along with fifth for Michael Egan at 145 and sixth for Nathan Johanningmeier at 182, represents the first time since 2010 the school has boasted multiple place winners, estimated head coach Chet Bachman.

“These three kids represented our school very well,” he said of the seniors. “I was very proud of them.”

Riddled by the injury bug last season, the MFL MarMac wrestling team is healthy and ready to take on one of its most challenging schedules ever.

“We’re wrestling down by Missouri in a tournament with 16 teams. We’re wrestling Lisbon and we’re gonna go wrestle Lake Mills, a top-five team,” said head coach Chet Bachman. “We wrestle 30 duals. That’s unreal.”

Bachman said the Bulldog wrestlers will get 50 to 60 matches this year—an unheard of amount. It’s important, he added, to put them in places and positions they’ve never been in.

The MFL MarMac boys basketball team will kick off its season Friday at South Winneshiek and, according to head coach Eric Dettbarn, there’s a lot to be excited about.

“What has me most excited about this group is the potential we have,” shared Dettbarn, now in his 32nd year at the helm. “If we come in with the mentality that the team comes first, and play with great effort night in and night out, we have the chance to have a very good year.”

The MFL MarMac girls basketball team boasts, possibly, the most talented roster Jason Winter has seen in his time with the program, first as an assistant and now in his second season as head coach.

“We’re really excited about the kids we’ve got,” said Winter, who is joined by assistant coaches Stephanie Michel, Jeremy Schellhorn and Jess Schubert. “We’ve got a great group of seniors who are going to lead us. We’ve got 11 upperclassmen, and they’re all capable of giving us meaningful minutes. Then you throw in some of the underclassmen. It’s got the looks of an exciting year.”

MFL MarMac will make its debut in Class A football this week. The move from Class 1A to the smallest class of 11-man football was precipitated by the district’s enrollment decline, and it will present both challenges and opportunities, said head coach Dan Anderson.

Anderson, who’s coached in some capacity at MFL MarMac nearly every year since 2000, including 2005-2008 as head football coach, is back at the helm this year.

MFL MarMac head volleyball coach Kelly Winter hopes familiarity will lead her team to victory this season.

“We have most of our returning starters back this season,” she said. “They have played together for awhile now, and are aware of their teammates’ abilities.”

Among those key returners are seniors Jayde Schubert, Josie Kleinow and Summer Schutte. The team also features a strong junior class, including RoseMary McGeough, Brinan Berger, Bailey Winter, Megan Lang, Taylor Berns, Rachel Davis and Ashley Weaver.

There’s a renewed interest in cross country at MFL MarMac this year, said Eric Koenig, who’s taken over as the team’s head coach after three years as an assistant.

“We have some kids who took a break for a year who are back, and we’ve got some upperclassmen out who have never participated in cross country before,” said Koenig, who will be joined by first-year assistant Ralph Hill.

Egan places sixth at state wrestling

In his third trip to the state wrestling tournament, MFL MarMac junior Michael Egan earned a medal, placing sixth at 138 pounds in Class 1A. He did it all with a torn ACL.

Head coach Chet Bachman credited Egan for taking on some tough competition, as all but one of his opponents were ranked. He also commended Egan’s ability to bounce back from defeat.

Egan said his first-match victory was key to his state tournament success. “Once I got that first win, I knew it was right there for me to go out and take,” he shared. “I knew I could get a medal.”

Egan said his achievement was most meaningful because of the hard work he’s put in, not just during the wrestling season, but throughout the whole year.

For Michael Egan, the third time really was the charm. In his third trip to the state wrestling tournament, the MFL MarMac junior finally earned a medal, placing sixth at 138 pounds in Class 1A.

Egan said having a taste of that state experience the past two years helped him reach the podium this time around.

“The first time I was there, I was like ‘Oh,’ when I walked out and saw everyone,” Egan said. “This time, I was able to focus. I didn’t let that get in my head.”

MFL MarMac junior Michael Egan has advanced to the state wrestling tournament after placing second at 138 pounds at the Class 1A District 6 meet in Decorah on Feb. 10. This will be Egan’s third trip to the state tournament.

“It’s a challenge to get there,” said head coach Chet Bachman, who noted it’s rare for a wrestler to make it to state every year. “At this point, you’ve gotta go get it. You’ve gotta take guys down. He’s done a good job of that this year.”

Egan began the season wrestling at 132 pounds, but later moved up to the 138 weight class.

“We felt there was more of an opportunity there,” Bachman said, “and it worked for him.”
