Error propels Prairie boys to win

A walk-off error propelled the Prairie du Chien Blackhawk baseball team to a decisive and dramatic nonconference victory over West Salem, 3-2. 

The game was tied at 2 when Ryan McGrath hit a towering pop fly into the tricky wind that the West Salem left fielder managed to get a glove on, but couldn’t hang onto as Josh Dyer scored the winning run from second base.

River Ridge split a twinbill with visiting Argyle Friday afternoon in high school baseball action.

In the opener, Argyle scored 4 runs in the bottom of the first inning, 1 in the second, 1 in the third and 7 in the fourth en route to a 13-0 win in five innings.

Argyle had 12 hits in the contest. River Ridge had 2 hits and committed 4 errors.

Prairie du Chien had big rallies in the second and third innings to easily defeat visiting Fennimore 15-2 in five innings in the opening baseball game for both teams. 

The Golden Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Prairie then rallied for 5 runs in the bottom of the second and 9 more in the third to go ahead 14-2. They scored the final run in the fourth inning.

Area basketball players named to WBCA All Star Teams

Prairie du Chien’s Hunter Davis (52) will play for the D3 Red Team in Wisconsin Dells in the WBCA All Star game.

Several area high school basketball players have been named to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-Star Team. 

Hunter Davis of Prairie du Chien will play for the Division 3 Red Team on June 15 beginning at 12:30 p.m. in the JustAgame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.

Jared Payne of Seneca will play on June 15 for the Division 5 White Team beginning at 9 a.m.

Lomas, Payne earn WBCA All State honors

Carter Lomas (1) of Wauzeka-Steuben, a junior, has been selected to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All State First Team for Division 5. Lomas has been a First Team All-Conference choice his first three years on varsity and is already over 1,200 career points. The Ridge and Valley Co-Player of the Year this season, he averaged 20.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. (Courier Press file photos)

Jared Payne (24) of Seneca, shown here in 2018, has been selected to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All State First Team for Division 5 for the 2018-2019 season. Payne is a three-time Co-Player of the Year in the Ridge and Valley Conference, doing a lot of everything for the Indians and head coach David Boland. As a senior, Payne averaged 17.4 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.0 assists per game to lead the team in every major statistics category.

Gabby Ritchie of Prairie du Chien High School has been named to the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-Star Team. She will be a member of the South Team for Division 3.

Prairie du Chien came from behind to defeat visiting Lodi 53-43 in a WIAA Division 3 Regional semifinal boys basketball game Friday night. 

A big and physical Lodi team limited Prairie to just one shot on most trips down the floor in the first half to take a 22-15 halftime lead.

Top seeded Black Hawk, an undefeated powerhouse this season, defeated second seeded River Ridge 58-27 in a WIAA Division 5 Sectional semifinal in Mineral Point in girls basketball Thursday night. 

River Ridge ended a very good season with a 21-3 overall record and a 10-0 mark in the Six Rivers West. The Lady Timberwolves were the regional champions and the undefeated outright conference champions.
