Hornets fall

The Wauzeka-Steuben Hornets boys basketball team had a light week on the court last week with only one game due to weather.
The Hornets traveled to Cassville last Thursday, Jan. 23 for a non-conference game with the Comets and were defeated 35-29. Cassville improved their season record to 4-8 with the win while Wauzeka-Steuben dropped to 2-9 overall.

Hornets split pair of games

The Wauzeka-Steuben Hornets girls basketball team began last week with a 44-38 road win over the River Ridge Timberwolves last Tuesday, Jan. 14. 
The Hornets extended their winning streak to nine games.
Isabella Bunders led the Hornets in both points (11) and rebounds (nine). She was followed by Macy Mitchell and Elizabeth Wright (eight points each), Emma Wall (six points), Natalie Wright (five points), Kylie Manning (four points) and Claire Wright (two points).

Platteville girls clip Hawks

The race for the Southwest Wisconsin Conference Girls Basketball Championship (and a top seed in the postseason) saw its first big battle take place this past Friday night at Prairie du Chien High School.
 The Blackhawks and the visitors from Platteville each entered the game undefeated in conference play at 4-0.
A back-and-forth first half featured a late 8-0 run by Platteville that swung the momentum to the visitors.

PdC loses at Mineral Point, take second at Aquinas

Prairie du Chien wrestling traveled to Mineral Point last Thursday, Jan. 16, for a non-conference dual. 
Before the dual began, a series of girls wrestling matches took place, with the Hawks going 5-0. 
Rosalie Kossman, Aspen Gelo, Hannah Ingham, Addyson Claycomb and Irelynd Cejka captured pinfall wins.

River Ridge boys suffer first loss thanks to Highland

With an 85-72 victory over the visiting Timberwolves of River Ridge last Thursday night, the Highland Cardinals separated themselves from the rest of the pack in the Six Rivers West boys basketball conference standings.
Coach Jim Wagner’s Timberwolves and coach Ryan Hill’s Cardinals both entered last Thursday night’s contest unbeaten in league play with identical records of 8-0. Now, the Cardinals maintain sole ownership of the league’s top spot as the first half of the conference schedule comes to a close.

River Ridge wrestlers at I-W Invite

Five members of the River Ridge wrestling team participated at the Ithaca/Weston Invite last Saturday, where they scored 25.5 points to finish in a tie for 11th place among 13 competing teams.
Scoring a team-high 11.5 points for the Timberwolves with a fifth-place finish was 144-pound sophomore Cael Koenig, who is currently 16-8 on the season.

Hornet boys stopped in pair of games

The Wauzeka-Steuben Hornets boys basketball team traveled to Richland Center last Monday, Jan. 13, and were dealt a 64-35 non-conference defeat. 
Julius Cooley was Wauzeka-Steuben’s leading scorer with 10 points. He was followed by Cooper Lomas (nine points), Brett Wagner (eight points), John Martin and Theodore Millin (four points each). Cooley completed the double-double by leading the team in rebounding with 10 rebounds.

NC/S boys wrestlers back on mat

North Crawford/Seneca wrestlers competed at a trio of meets over the last few weeks. First up was the Lee Griffin Invite at Kickapoo High School on Saturday, Jan. 11. 
Sawyer Swiggum led the way with a first place finish at 215 pounds. Senior Jaren Grimsled was second at 120 pounds.
NC/S traveled to Postville on Tuesday, Jan. 14 for a five team meet with Postville, Clayton Ridge, Janesville and North Tama. Grimsled and Swiggum each went 4-0 on the night.

The Prairie du Chien Boys Basketball team lost a trio of games this past week. 
First up was a non-conference home game against Waukon last Tuesday, Jan. 14. Despite a strong effort by the Hawks, the Indians took a 26-21 lead into halftime before pulling away in the second half for a 63-55 victory.
Prairie du Chien then traveled to Spring Green two nights later where they were defeated 69-39 by the host River Valley Blackhawks.

Timberwolves win one, lose one

With a convincing 53-23 conference crossover victory over visiting Juda (0-7, 2-12) last Friday night, coach Veronica Zinkle and her River Ridge girls basketball team improved to 4-3 in league action and 10-4 overall.
The Timberwolves got a team-high 11 points from freshman Ava Nies, who was 4-of-8 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. She also had a team-high three blocked shots to go along with two steals and three rebounds.
