Mar-Mac tops River Ridge

MFL/Mar-Mac came from behind to narrowly defeat host River Ridge 46-44 in nonconference girls basketball Thursday on Parents’ Night.

The Timberwolves missed a chance to tie the game in the waning moments and fell to 10-2 on the season. Their only losses are to undefeated Mar-Mac and undefeated Prairie du Chien. 

River Ridge led 22-16 at the half and looked to be in control for most of the game, leading by 8 points late, before succumbing to Mar-Mac.

On Friday, Dec. 21, the fifth ranked PDC Blackhawk wrestlers traveled to Spring Green for a conference showdown with always tough River Valley. Prior to varsity wrestling, there were a couple of JV matches. 

At JV 285#, Brice Martin picked up a first period fall. After a quick takedown, Martin put in a power half to deck his opponent. At JV 152#, Clayton DuCharme also decked his opponent in the first period. DuCharme also scored a quick takedown and went with a tight outside cradle for the fall.

Prairie wrestlers at Bi-State Classic

The 37th Annual Bi-State Classic, hosted by Holmen High School, was held on Dec. 28-29 at the La Crosse Center. This year, there were 68 teams competing, grouped together no matter the school size, in the ever tough tournament representing both Wisconsin and Minnesota high schools. 

A few quick tidbits about just how stacked this tournament is: 86 wrestlers were in their state tournaments last year, 38 wrestlers were state medalists, five wrestlers were state champions, 180 wrestlers are ranked in their respective states.

Wauzeka-Steuben beat visiting De Soto 71-50 in a Ridge and Valley boys basketball game Friday night. 

The Hornets improved to 5-1 overall and 4-0 atop the conference.

The Pirates dropped to 5-1 on the season and 3-1 in the Ridge and Valley.

Prairie du Chien grapplers over West Salem-Bangor

The #6 ranked in the state Prairie du Chien Blackhawks traveled to Bangor on Thursday evening, Dec. 7, for a non-conference meet with West Salem-Bangor. The meet opened up at 285# where Luke Wright would score the opening takedown on a nice slide by. In the second period, Wright would score a reversal into a pinning combination for a fall. 

At 106#, Nick Mara received a forfeit. At 113#, highly-ranked Matt Rogge scored a couple of nice takedowns, one with a leg sweep single. He also had a couple of pinning combinations, one with an outside cradle, en route to a 10-2 major decision.

On Friday night, the Prairie du Chien Blackhawks played in front of an inspired student section and home crowd as the Hawks opened up SWC play.  

The Hawks showed tremendous ball movement on the offensive end by making the extra pass which led them to shoot 56 percent from the floor for the game.

Wauzeka-Steuben easily beat visiting Weston 71-29 in a Ridge and Valley girls basketball game Thursday night. 

Wauzeka-Steuben built a 48-20 halftime lead and cruised to the win.

Erin Krachey had a game-high 23 points to lead the Lady Hornets. Jordan Mormann netted 11. Maddy Reichmann scored 10 and Ravyn Krachey tickled the twine for 8.

The defending SWC and Regional Champion PdC Blackhawks opened the 2018-2019 season on Thursday, Nov. 29, traveling to always tough Viroqua for a nonconference dual. 

The meet started at 195#. Grant Martin made his debut in a Blackhawk singlet. Martin wrestled a tough match against a senior before being pinned in period two. 

At 220#, Luke Wright would lock up a bear hug and take his opponent to his back for a quick first period fall.

It was a scrappy game between host River Ridge and Prairie du Chien Tuesday night.

 

Prairie du Chien defeated host River Ridge 55-41 in nonconference girls basketball action Tuesday night. 

The Lady Blackhawks built a 24-18 halftime lead over the Lady Timberwolves.

Macey Banasik netted 11 points to pace Prairie du Chien. Lily Krahn pumped in 10. Ella Hager scored 9. Gabby Ritchie and Makenzie Knapp each had 7. Abby Feye scored 5 and Allison Allbee had 4.
