Dorothy Halverson

 

Dorothy Halverson, 87, of McGregor, Iowa, passed away suddenly Tuesday, May 26.

Dorothy Rosemary Pfiffner was born Sept. 10, 1927, the daughter of Edmond and Clara (Miller) Pfiffner of Lansing, Iowa. Dorothy married Roger Halverson of Waukon, Iowa, and the couple moved to McGregor where they raised their three daughters. Dorothy was a housewife and businesswoman, operating Dorothy’s Beauty Salon out of her home in downtown McGregor for many years. She was an active member of St. Mary’s Church, and enjoyed crocheting, dancing to big band music and spending time with her family.

Myrna “Jean” Kelley

 

Myrna “Jean” Kelley, 78, of Prairie du Chien passed away Sunday, May 24, at the Prairie Maison Health Center. 

She was born Nov. 19, 1936 in Bagley, the daughter of Myron and Marie (Ruh) Pace. 

She is survived by one daughter, Kathy (George) Hoffman of Wauzeka; one granddaughter, Katelyn Hoffman; one brother, Tom Pace of Bagley; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three siblings, Treva Trine, Lyle Pace and Shirley Satter.

James L. Hermsen

 

James L. Hermsen, 88, passed away Saturday, May 23, at Orchard Manor Nursing Home, rural Lancaster. 

He was born Oct. 5, 1926 the son of John and Clementine (Bohnenkamp) Hermsen. Jim graduated from Bloomington High School and was drafted into the United States Army, during the Korean Conflict. He returned home to farm in rural Bloomington. Jim was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and its Knights of Columbus and Holy Name Society. He was also a member of the American Legion Post No. 5 of Patch Grove. Jim was an avid sports fan, especially baseball and Green Bay Packer football. He was known for his great storytelling. Jim dearly enjoyed his family and keeping up with their activities.

Evelyn M. Shulka, 79, of Prairie du Chien passed away Friday, May 22, at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, after a brief illness. 

She was born May 21, 1936 in Prairie du Chien the daughter of Charles and Florence (Bovee) Sawvell. Evelyn was a successful local businesswoman who began the Skateway Roller Rink and later owned Prairie Mobile Homes. She also operated a local clothing store and furniture store. She loved to travel.

Carolyn C. Henry,

 

Carolyn C. Henry, 77, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Monday, May 18, at the Crossing Rivers Hospital in Prairie du Chien. 

She was born March 20, 1938 the daughter of Alfred and Irene (Schmidt) Kilburg. She married Arnold Henry at St. Wenceslaus Church in Eastman, on June 18, 1957. Carolyn worked at the General Hospital in Prairie du Chien and later she and her husband owned and operated Arnie’s Refrigeration in Prairie du Chien for over 40 years. She enjoyed playing in the women’s pool league. Arnie preceded her in death on Aug. 31, 2006.

She was born Feb. 21, 1952 in Richland Center the daughter of Parnell ‘Ned’ and Julia (Schumacher) Walsh. Cathy enjoyed music, dancing and spending time with family.

Jeffrey A. Marx, 48, of Prairie du Chien passed away Friday, May 15, at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. 

He was born Oct. 3, 1966 in Prairie du Chien the son of James and Judy (Benoy) Marx. Jeff worked as a foreman for Cleary Buildings in Prairie du Chien.

Lt. Col. Leroy E. (Roy) Bunders (USA-Ret)

 

Lt. Col. Leroy E. (Roy) Bunders (USA-Ret) of Poquoson, Va. died May 1, at the VA Hospital in Hampton, Va.

Roy was born Jan. 26, 1931 in Wauzeka to Louise (Schneider) Bunders and Charles Bunders.

Roy was a graduate of Prairie du Chien High School. He enlisted in the Army on Nov. 1, 1948 and while serving in the Korean War, was awarded a battlefield commission as a Second Lieutenant. He earned many medals and citations during his years of military service.

Betty N. Allert

 

Betty N. Allert, 89, of McGregor, Iowa passed away Wednesday, May 13, at the Crossing Rivers Hospital in Prairie du Chien. She was born Oct. 1, 1925 in McGregor the daughter of Fred and Jessie (Vaughn) Bachtell. She was married to LaVerne Allert who preceded her in death. Betty worked at the McGregor Pharmacy for over 40 years and was an active member of the McGregor United Methodist Church.
