Ronald R. Mullikin

Ronald R. Mullikin, 87, of Wauzeka, passed away on Friday, Jan. 18, 2019, at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, surrounded by his family.  

He was born on Sept. 1, 1931, in Bell Center, the son of Gilbert and Gladys (Peak) Mullikin. He was an Army, Korean Conflict Veteran.  

He is survived by three sons and a daughter, Steve Mullikin of Boscobel, Bryan Mullikin of Gays Mills, Terry Mullikin (fiancée Kellie Ronnfeldt) of Boscobel, and Lori Anderson of McGregor, Iowa; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three brothers,Virgil (Marion) Mullikin of Waldo, Gary Mullikin of Waukesha and Kenneth Mullikin of Waukesha.

Marlys Marie Mason

Marlys Marie Mason passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019, at the age of 87, at Noel Manor in Verona. 

She was born in Lone Elm, Kan., on Feb. 2, 1931, the daughter of Ralph Bynum and Frances Wilma Lewis. 

She attended the University of Kansas and obtained her nursing degree. After meeting her husband, James Mason, in San Diego, they returned to Wisconsin to settle in Bagley. Marlys worked at several hospitals in the area, retiring as director of nursing at the Lancaster Nursing Home. In her free time, she and Jim enjoyed time spent on their houseboat while on the Mississippi River and also spent their winters in Florence, Ariz.

Deanna Jean Matlock

Deanna Jean Matlock, 72, of Eastman, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2019, at her home in Eastman. 

She was born Dec. 3, 1946, to Leroy and Freda (Stanford) Boyles in Salem, Ill. 

Deanna was united in marriage with Charles Wesley Matlock on Dec. 17, 1981. in Ottawa, Ill. To this union, Charlie brought his children, Kent, Kim, Roy, Charles Jr. and Opal. Deanna worked for Badgeaminit in Illinois, as a waitress at a truck stop in Illinois and, after moving to Wisconsin, she worked as a shift manager at McDonalds in Prairie du Chien. In her spare time, Deanna enjoyed doing puzzles, reading, sewing, growing houseplants, feeding the birds, gardening with Charlie and spending time with her family.

Joanne Jean Nagel

Joanne Jean Nagel, 75, of Eastman, passed away Monday, Jan. 7, 2019, at the Bland-Bekkedahl Hospice Center in Viroqua after a courageous battle with cancer. 

She was born March 23, 1943, at her grandparents’ home in Seneca, to Louis and Lucille (Sutton) Fradette. Joanne grew up in and spent the majority of her life in the Seneca area, graduating Seneca High School in 1961. In 1963, Joanne married Everette Reynolds and had two sons, Jim and Roger.

Robert J. 'Bob' McCarthy

Robert J. “Bob” McCarthy, 92, of Eastman, died on Sunday, Jan. 13, at the Prairie Maison care facility in Prairie du Chien. 

He was born June 22, 1926, in Wauzeka, the son of John and Esther (Lathrop) McCarthy. He married Lorraine Polodna on June 6, 1950; they lived in the Eastman area the rest of their lives. Lorraine preceded him in death on Jan. 28, 1999. Bob managed the Prairie City Bank-Eastman Station for 36 years and was the past president of the Crawford County Banker’s Association. He served as Eastman village treasurer, Eastman water superintendent and a volunteer fireman, each for over a half century. Bob served as a treasurer of 13 different organizations at one time and enjoyed driving a school bus for the Prairie du Chien School District for over 17 years. He was an active member of St. Wenceslaus Parish in Eastman, serving as a Eucharistic minister and usher.

Leroy F. Wood

Leroy F. Wood, 79, of Prairie du Chien and formerly of Olin, Iowa, passed away Thursday, Jan. 10, 2019, surrounded by his family at his home.  

He was born Sept. 22, 1939, in Olin, the son of Emery and Hazel Wood. 

Leroy served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War as a ship’s engineer. He later worked as an engineer for the Iowa State Penitentiary at Anamosa, retiring after 28 years.  Leroy was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.

William R. 'Bill' Specht

William R. “Bill” Specht, 96, of Prairie du Chien, passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, at the Prairie Maison Care Center.  

He was born March 28, 1922, in Dodgeville, the son of Charles and Sarah (Reese) Specht.  

He married Mary Dickert on Nov. 26, 1942, in Madison.  She preceded him in death on April 20, 2008.  Bill owned and operated Specht’s IGA in Prairie du Chien for many years.  He was a founding member of the Prairie du Chien Country Club and was an avid Wisconsin Badger fan.  

He is survived by his daughters, Barb (Stan) Toberman and Peg (Kurt) Smith; a son Jim (Mary Beth) Specht, all of Prairie du Chien; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Marlene A. Hagen

Marlene A. Hagen, 83, of Wauzeka, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019, at Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien. 

She was born June 14, 1935, in Wauzeka, the daughter of Edwin and Viola (Hurda) Reichmann. Marlene worked for the state of Wisconsin in Vital Statistics in Madison for many years until her retirement. 

She is survived by her children, Pamela Replinger, Elizabeth Harrington, Steven Hagen and Susan Adkinson; her siblings, Edwin Reichmann, Pat Dimmer, Victor, Lyle and Walter Reichmann; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Evelyn A. Peterson

Evelyn A. Peterson, 86, of Lancaster, passed away on Jan. 10, 2019. at the Lancaster Care Center, in Lancaster. 

Evelyn was born July 12, 1932, in Soldiers Grove, the daughter of Alfred and Mae (Guist) Hiller. She graduated from Soldiers Grove High School. Evelyn was united in marriage to Vernon D. Peterson on May 31, 1950, in Gays Mills. Together, they farmed above Soldiers Grove until 1957 when they moved to Lancaster.

Jeffrey John Hemmer

Jeffrey John Hemmer, 53, of Prairie du Chien, walked back into the arms of the Maker on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2019, after an extended illness. 

He was born on Sept. 27, 1965, in Prairie du Chien, the son of Harold Thomas and Donna (Leard) Hemmer. 

Jeffrey graduated from Prairie du Chien High School in 1984. He married the lady who made his heart sing, Paula (Gjetley-Kautman) on March 14, 1987 and they spent the next three decades cultivating their love and nurturing their growing family.
