Lester L. Groth

Lester Lee Groth, 78, of Garber, passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2020, at his residence. He was born on April 11, 1942, in Oelwein, the son of Ernest and Velma (Willie) Groth. Lester was raised and educated in the Elkport area, attending the Dannenbring Country School until the third grade. He then attended the Elkport schools and graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1961. After graduation, Lester farmed and worked at Farley and Letcher for a short period of time. 

On Jan. 15, 1972, Lester was united in marriage to Una Horstman at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg. Three sons were born to this union. The couple farmed together on the family farm, raising a variety of animals as well as grain farming.

Norma J. Erickson

Norma Jean Erickson, 92, of Farmersburg, died Monday, June 1, 2020, at her daughter’s home in Delhi. Norma was born May 17, 1928, to Herman and Florence (Homan) Plummer in La Crosse, Wis. She attended school in Waukon.

Norma was united in marriage with Charles A. Erickson on June 10, 1946, at The Little Brown Church in Nashua. Three children were born to this union. Norma was a wonderful homemaker and farmer’s wife. She enjoyed gardening, playing cards and games, fishing in Minnesota, dancing and seeing old cars. She found great joy in visiting with neighbors and loved having the grandchildren over. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg and the American Legion Auxiliary.

April Elaine Miller

April Elaine Loetz Miller, 75, of Elkader, died Saturday, May 23, 2020. April was born April 5, 1945, to Theodore James and Adelaide May (Wakelee) Loetz in Elkhart, Ind. She was baptized on Nov. 18, 1945, and confirmed on May 17, 1959, at St. Paul Lutheran Church. April graduated from Mar-Mac High School. She continued her education and earned a degree in practical nursing at Blackhawk College in East Moline, Ill. She was a member of Phi Theta Kappa.

April was united in marriage with William G. Miller on Dec. 27, 1962, in McGregor. Three children were born to this union. April was a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in McGregor.

Helen 'Chris' McShane

Helen “Chris” Lorraine (Christoffer) McShane, 87, of Waterville, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Saturday, May 16, 2020, at Great River Care Center in McGregor. Chris was born Nov. 3, 1932, to Frederick and Tora Helen (Baxter) Christoffer in Ayrshire. Chris enjoyed working as a telegrapher and secretary best. She loved the Lord, her many friends, pets and birds. Her favorite pastime was love of family and hosting or attending as many of their activities as possible. Chris also enjoyed cooking and teaching her grandchildren how to prepare food, like pancakes.

Brian Lee Nading

Brian Lee Nading, 58, of McGregor, died May 2, 2020. Brian was born on Feb. 13, 1962, to Dwain and Joyce (Bovee) Nading in Prairie du Chien, Wis.

Throughout the years, Brian worked for the railroad, as a logger for 19 years and currently was employed at Bungi Agri for the last 10 years. Brian was a member of First Lutheran Church in McGregor. He enjoyed being outdoors hunting, fishing, trapping and riding his motorcycle. Brian always was there to help friends and family.

Surviving Brian are his two children, Cory (Jeanna) Nading of McGregor and Lee (Kayla) Nading of Strawberry Point; three grandchildren, Derek and Lucas Nading and Clayton Nading; one brother, Kim Nading of McGregor; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dwain and Joyce Nading; and one grandson, Braydyn.

Donna Mae Starkey

Donna Mae Starkey, 79, of Luana, died Sunday, May 10, 2020, at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. Donna was born Sept. 20, 1940, to Clayton and Lucille (Glawe) O’Neal in St. Olaf. She graduated from Elkader High School and then trained for nursing.

Donna was united in marriage with Clifford Starkey on Feb. 18, 1978, in Monona.

Alfred P. Goldsmith

Alfred P. Goldsmith, 91, of McGregor, formerly of Earlville, passed away Monday, April 20, 2020.

Alfred Phillip Goldsmith was born Feb. 25, 1929, in Earlville, the son of Bernard and Mary (Schmidt) Goldsmith. On Dec. 28, 1963, he married Marjorie (Wells) Thuman in Stone City. Alfred was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. He was a self-employed farmer for over 60 years, was a very involved member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in McGregor, the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus. Al was a very kind and patient man of deep faith, had a wonderful smile and loved family, friends, fishing, dancing, bingo and woodworking. He is deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Janice M. Hedemann

On April 1, 2020, Janice M. Hedemann passed away after a two-year battle with breast cancer. She was the beloved life partner of Steve Mangano; devoted daughter of the late Darrell and Joyce Hedemann; dear sister of Hugh Hedemann and his wife Joanne, Susan McGee and her husband Michael, and the late Mark Hedemann. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was also loved by Steve’s children and grandchildren alike.

Darwin McClain Hallberg, 88, of McGregor, died on Tuesday, March 31, 2020, at Great River Care Center in McGregor. Darwin was born Feb. 2 1932, to Henry and Marie (Bachtell) Hallberg in McGregor. He graduated from McGregor High School in 1950. Darwin joined and proudly served in the United States Marines from 1952 to 1954, during the Korean War

June Mariel Kuefler

June Mariel (Goergen) Kuefler died of Alzheimer’s on March 23, 2020, in Bedford, Texas. Her daughter, Julie Dougherty, was at her side as she passed peacefully to her eternal reward. June was born May 27, 1926, in McGregor, daughter of William Goergen and Margery (Claudy) Goergen. She graduated from the University of Dubuque in 1947, with a B.S. in physical education and a minor in music. Athletics and music would be among her lifelong loves.

In college she met her future husband, Raymond Bernard Kuefler (Ray). They were married Aug. 1, 1949, and had four children, John, Jane, Julie (Dougherty) and Joseph. June was preceded in death by Ray (d. 2000) and daughter Jane (d. 1976), and is survived by John (Lawrence, Kan.), Julie (Irving, Texas) and Joseph (Stow, Mass.), 24 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
