Two new providers join Cornerstone Family Practice

Cornerstone Family Practice welcomed two new providers last month, rounding out their roster to four physicians and four nurse practitioners. Tammi Noonan, DNP, and Anna Svennungsen, ARNP, have begun seeing patients and are enjoying their new positions.

GermanFest homebrew winners announced

Ballots were cast by 77 GermanFest guests  who sampled nine different homebrews in a competition that featured entries from area home brewers.

The contest winner was Home Lite submitted by Dr. Andy Smith of Guttenberg and second place went to David Scott of Urbandale.

The Guttenberg Development & Tourism’s GermanFest committee coordinated publicity, and The Guttenberg Press generously covered news of the event.

Clayton County voters will go to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 3, to choose city leaders. Polling and candidate information will appear in The Press in October. The County Auditor's website contains the following information about registration and absentee voting.

School may be back in session, but imaginations are still in full swing at Shepherd Gallery and Creativity Center. After school art programming began on Sept. 14, and this fall, organizers are filling the courtyard with song. Community members are invited to enjoy locally produced music, food, and drink on Friday evenings from 6 – 8 p.m. throughout October and into November.

On May 8, 2014, David Moffitt snuck into the Grimes home of Justin Michael. Moffitt shot and killed Michael while he slept next to his fiancé, a woman named Angie Ver Huel who Moffitt had casually dated months prior. A twisting, turning trail of evidence eventually led to Guttenberg High School graduate Drew Bahlmann, who helped convict Moffitt at a trial held this summer. Bahlmann appeared on Dateline NBC in a Sept. 11 episode detailing the crime.

New collection site for Goodwill Truck visit

Arrangements have been made for the Goodwill truck to visit Guttenberg following city-wide garage sales on Sept. 25-26.

Residents may leave usable donations at the Goodwill truck to be parked at a new location at the corner of Hwy. 52 and Schiller Street (north of Bender's Foods) from Friday, Sept. 25, to Saturday, Sept. 26. The truck will be open during daytime hours and closed at night to prevent vandalism.

Goodwill has released the following list of items they do NOT accept. Please note that televisions are not accepted; Goodwill has to pay to dispose of each TV left in their truck.

Candidates file for city offices

In municipal elections slated for Tuesday, Nov. 3, Guttenberg voters will go to the polls to fill two seats on the city council, two on the park board and three on the hospital board. 

City council: In an uncontested race, Austin Greve and Justin Trappe are running for two open seats on the city council. Incumbents Virginia Saeugling and Jane Parker, whose terms expire at the end of the year, did not file for re-election.

Guttenberg city council covers lengthy agenda

The Guttenberg city council covered a lengthy agenda  at its monthly meeting on Sept. 14, held a week later than usual due to the Labor Day holiday.

Mayor Russ Loven led councilmembers Virginia Saeugling, Fred Schaub, Dave Schlueter, Jane Parker and Steve Friedlein through the evening's agenda. Also at the council table was City Manager Mary Willett; City Attorney Michael Schuster was absent.

National Fall Prevention Awareness Day Sept. 23

September 23 is the first day of fall – and it’s also National Fall Prevention Awareness Day. While falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injury for people 65 years of age and older, they are not an inevitable part of aging. That’s why the Northeast Iowa Area Agency on Aging is joining forces with the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and the Falls Free® Coalition to take a stand to prevent falls.

Investigation continues into three overnight burglaries

Investigation continues into three overnight burglaries in the Guttenberg and Garnavillo area.

On Tuesday, Sept. 8,  the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office received reports of burglaries to three businesses in the Guttenberg and Garnavillo area — Bob’s Food Store in Garnavillo, Rausch Petroleum in Guttenberg and the Guttenberg Country Club.

The burglaries occurred between the evening of Labor Day, Sept. 7, to the early morning hours of Sept. 8.
