Council hears pool update

The Guttenberg city council, meeting in special session for a budget workshop on Jan. 16, heard an update from the Guttenberg pool committee.

Jesssica Cline first presented an overview of the pool's history and the committee's work with its consultant, Burbach Aquatics, Inc.

Committee member MJ Smith then presented details on the committee's plan for a pool and pool house, and received unanimous council approval for the following seven committee recommendations:

Aulwes on award-winning Rose Parade team

The 103rd Rose Bowl was played as usual in Pasadena, Calif., on Jan. 2, but it wasn’t business as usual for Guttenberg resident Sue Aulwes. While football teams prepared for plays on the field, she worked with a crew of volunteers behind the scenes to prepare a float for the 128th Rose Parade. She began work on Dec. 29, and worked until the wee hours of the morning on Jan. 1, putting in approximately 60 hours in four days.

Guttenberg hospital audit report

The accounting firm of Seim Johnson, LLP released an audit report for Guttenberg Municipal Hospital in September. 

The hospital's operating revenue totaled $15,324,121 for the year ended June 30, 2016, a 13% increase from the prior year. Total operating revenue included $14,491,689 in net patient service revenue, $835,293 in other operating revenue, and a $2,861 loss on disposal of capital assets.

Get spectacular views of America's national bird at the Marina Visitor Center in Guttenberg on Saturday, Feb. 11, when Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Eagle Watch and Cabin Fever Day. Live raptors, hot chili, and cool ice sculpting are among the entertainment planned. 

Dubuque photographer Gary Fagan will share his extensive body of wildlife work, including many shots of bald eagles in flight and on the hunt, diving for fish in the Mississippi.

By his third day in Guttenberg, pharmacist Chad Vaske had fielded the same question time and time again. “People are asking if they can transfer their prescriptions back here – and the answer to that is yes,” Vaske told The Press.

City council opens year with bridge project, wage increase

The Guttenberg city council in its first meeting of the new year, heard updates on the Garber Road bridge replacement project, considered but did not pass the third reading of a proposed cat licensing ordinance and okayed a wage increase for union city employees.

Mayor Russ Loven called the meeting to order with council members Austin Greve, Fred Schaub, Jane Parker and Virginia Saeugling present, along with Assistant City Manager Jamie Blume and City Attorney Michael Schuster.

MAMA donates $5,000 to school

Uniforms. Sheet music. Risers, instruments, and instrument repair; managing a school music program can be costly. That’s why the Mid American Music Association (MAMA) has decided to give a gift in the amount of $5,000 to the Clayton Ridge School District music programs.

Guttenberg Chamber plans annual membership meeting

The Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce will hold its membership banquet and annual meeting on Monday, Jan. 9, at PromiseLand Winery on the Great River Road south of Guttenberg.

The social hour will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The program and meeting will begin at 7:15 p.m.

The dinner will be catered by Clayton Ridge Farm, and tickets can be purchased in advance at the Welcome Center. Reservations are due by Jan. 4 by calling the Welcome Center at 563-252-2323 or emailing guttenberg@alpinecom.net.
