An updated Clayton County multi-jurisdictional multi-hazard mitigation plan is now available for public review and comment. Council members, city clerks, and mayors of cities within the county joined forces with the Clayton County Emergency Management Commission and Central, Clayton Ridge and MFL Mar-Mac school districts to draft the plan, which documents the county-wide hazard mitigation planning process and identifies relevant hazards, vulnerabilities and strategies the participating jurisdictions will use to decrease vulnerability and increase resiliency and sustainability.

The June meeting of the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital board was called to order at 5:30 p.m.  on Tuesday, June 28. Present were board members Doug Reimer, Janice Andregg, Bill Allyn, Karen Merrick, and Sue Osterhaus.

Fatal accident in Millville Saturday

An accident on Saturday, June 25, in Millville claimed the life of Jimmy Hansel, 66, of Guttenberg.

According to the Iowa State Highway Patrol, Hansel was southbound on Highway 52 when he lost control of his 1996 Honda motorcycle while  attempting to avoid stopped traffic on the highway. He entered the west ditch, overturned and was ejected from his bike. According to official reports, Hansel was not wearing a helmet.

Hansel was transported to Guttenberg Municipal Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

Mine expansion study meeting July 7

The mine reserve expansion study group has completed its draft report of zoning recommendations for the land being considered for rezoning for Pattison Sand Company.

Fireworks and more Saturday, July 2

Classic Independence Day traditions will be honored at this year’s Stars and Stripes Celebration. The iconic summer event is scheduled to take place this Saturday, kicking off with the Farmer’s Market at 8 a.m. on the 400 block of South River Park Drive, and ending in the timeless custom of fireworks over the Mississippi River. The second annual Interact 5K Walk/Run will also be held that morning, with registration beginning at 8 a.m. at the gazebo in Ingleside Park.

Florence Eilers featured in parade as Super Senior

Even after 99 years of life, Florence ‘Flossie’ Eilers is still having new experiences. On July 2, she’ll be featured as the Super Senior in Guttenberg’s Stars and Stripes Parade – her first time riding in a parade. Her sons, Jim Eilers of Montana and Ted Eilers of Guttenberg, will ride alongside her, while her son Dick Eilers of Guttenberg will march in the parade as a flag bearer.

Chamber announces plans for Stars and Stripes to be held July 2

The Stars and Stripes Celebration in Guttenberg will be held on Saturday, July 2, in the park north of Clayton Ridge Schools (131 S. River Park Dr.), unless otherwise noted. The day will begin with a 5K Walk/Run (registration at 8 a.m. in the north park gazebo, run at 9 a.m.) sponsored by the Clayton Ridge Interact Club. Guttenberg’s DNR Fish Hatchery, located at 331 S. River Park Drive, will be open at 9 a.m. on Saturday for viewing of live river animals. The Lockmaster’s House Heritage Museum will be open to visitors from 12 noon to 4 p.m. The Lock and Dam #10 observation deck will be open all day.

Shannon Athletic Complex this weekend. On Friday, June 24, the community is invited to enjoy Clayton Ridge’s first alumni game in support of the athletic department.

Tim Kuempel grew up playing football for the Guttenberg Pirates. He moved away and raised two sons, who also played football in a small school. When he returned to Guttenberg, Kuempel helped start Clayton Ridge’s Gridiron Club – and now, the Gridiron Club is helping him.
