Kaffee 1858 and Public House opens

A place for sharing food, drink, and conversation opened in Guttenberg this month. Kaffee 1858 and Public House is located in the historic building at 7 Schiller Street. Owner Sara Pattison subscribes to a motto quoted from Vincent Van Gogh: “In my painting of the Night Café, I’ve tried to express the idea that the café is a place where you can ruin yourself, go mad, commit crimes.”

Planning and Zoning votes in favor of Pattison rezone

It was standing room only at Tuesday evening’s meeting of the Clayton County Planning and Zoning committee, where Mike Finnegan and Anne Osmundson were scheduled to present the finalized report of the mine reserve study group, formed in response to a request from Pattison Sand to rezone over 700 acres of land along Great River Road. The report includes recommended restrictions for mining operations should the land be rezoned. The Planning and Zoning Committee then addressed Pattison Sand Company and landowners’ requests to rezone land from A-1 to M-2 to mine underground, process, store and ship silica sand and its by-product underground.

Books available now at library...Being Mortal book discussion Sept. 13

Following a successful turn-out in April to discuss Dr. Atul Gawande’s book, Being Mortal: Illness, Medicine and What Happens in the End, a second discussion event is being planned for September.

The book is now available to the public for reading in preparation for a panel discussion on  Tuesday, Sept. 13, from 6-8 p.m. at Eagle Ridge Independent and Assisted Living meeting room, 1329 Acre Street. Food will be provided.

Pool committee continues to meet

In attendance at the Aug. 4 pool committee meeting were John Barron, Al Ullerich, MJ Smith, Deb Moser, Bec Knudtson, Molly Moser and Jane Parker. Mary Streich was absent.

Several committee members reported on a meeting they attended that morning with a new representative, Roger Schamberger, of Burbach Aquatics, where Schamberger stated that the city is legally bound to Burbach for five years from July of 2014, the last time the city requested a service from them.

Back to school with new programs and new faces

While students have been enjoying summer vacation, staff at Clayton Ridge have been preparing for the coming school year. Custodial staff, the business manager and superintendent, and principals have been working vigorously throughout the summer months. “Summer really is all about gearing up for the upcoming year, and so we’re making sure all the requisitions are approved and ordered to have the necessary curriculum and materials that the teachers need to start on day one; we’re doing data collection on the year past, and state reporting is due,” said superintendent Shane Wahls.

Willett accepts settlement offer

Former City Manager Mary Willett last week accepted a settlement offer approved by the city council at its regular monthly meeting on Monday, Aug. 8. 

Willett resigned at a special council meeting on July 18. The motion to accept her resignation provided for six months of health insurance coverage and four months of salary, with details to be worked out between Willett's attorney and Assistant City Attorney Jim Garrett.

Clayton County Fair offers food, music, thrills, family fun, more

Clayton County's annual salute to its rural heritage, the 162nd annual Clayton County Fair, opened Tuesday for a week-long run of family-focused events ranging from  livestock shows, to free midway rides, live entertainment, 4-H judging, great fair food and more.

Daily admission includes free parking and free grandstand entertainment. Parents will be pleased to learn that children under 12 are admitted free, and all carnival rides are free.

Clayton Ridge High School 2008 graduate Brandon Adams started small, working for his father’s ice company in Garnavillo. Now, his goal is to impact one billion lives by 2029. He’ll do it by organizing events that bring people together, through public speaking to inspire and motivate, by building relationships and by using video to tell his story and the stories of other young entrepreneurs.

Andersons study at world-renowned mosaic art school

It took thousands of individual pieces of glass, hand-cut to size and glued upside-down in a mirror image of the final artwork, but this spring Pastor Shane Anderson of Guttenberg unveiled a stunning mosaic of Christ the Pantocrator. It took over eight months to complete, using 10,000 individual pieces, and was on display this summer at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Train derailment near Clayton

A rock slide north of Clayton on Saturday morning, July 23,  caused the derailment of a Canadian Pacific train when the engineer was unable to stop in time before hitting the debris.

The lead locomotive and 12 empty cars left the tracks. There were no injuries, and no liquids or hazardous materials were in the cars that derailed.

CP crews were dispatched to the scene and worked throughout the rest of the day and night to open the tracks. Trains were back in operation by Sunday morning.
