Veterans Day program is Nov. 11 at CR school gymnasium

The public is invited to honor military veterans on Friday, Nov. 11, at 10 a.m. at the Clayton Ridge High School gym in Guttenberg.

The program will open with a color guard  made up of members of the local American Legion, Amvets and VFW posts. Clay-Gar American Legion Post of Garnavillo will present a POW/MIA ceremony. The pledge of allegiance will be led by the first place state winner of the fifth grade essay contest.

Veterans Day community band

Guttenberg German Band members, along with the school band and any area musicians who care to participate, will make up a municipal band for a program in the high school gym to honor the veterans in the area on Nov. 11 at 10 a.m.

“With Doc on our sidelines, he takes care of our students  no matter what their illness or injury is. He has helped to make sure I could do my job by volunteering countless hours to take care of our students' health while they’re participating in football, and has served our community in a way that I am sure we will be forever in debt,” said head Clayton Ridge Football Coach Chad Harbaugh.

For 25 years, Dr. Jeff Hoffmann has been pacing the sidelines at football games in Guttenberg.

Busy October school board meeting

The Clayton Ridge School Board of Directors met in regular session on Oct. 13. Members in attendance were John Heying, Christine Aulwes, Michael Finnegan, Alicia Helle, Ellen Johnson, Jason Reimer and Kathy Ihde. 

Heying was unanimously elected president of the board with Aulwes unanimously elected vice president. Mary Seifert was appointed board secretary with an hourly raise of 45 cents and Dave Schlueter was appointed treasurer. Board members Heying, Ihde and Finnegan will remain on the negotiations committee.

Guttenberg has been named one of two communities along the River Bluff Scenic Byway to receive funding for a public art project as part of a larger movement across Iowa’s byway corridors. Umbrella Arts and Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce have worked together to get city approval for the installation of a series of sculptures on light poles along the eastern side of River Park Drive in the historic downtown.
