Stirn brings ancient tradition home from Ontario

Since ancient times, humans have been purposefully leaving traces of their presence throughout the landscape. From spray-painted graffiti and names carved into the bricks of Guttenberg’s 1903 school building, to projects like traveling painted rocks, all the way back to prehistoric cairns built worldwide, we have long had a desire to communicate our existence to future voyagers.

Guttenberg Gallery and Creativity Center presents its second annual Art by the River Fine Art Festival and Workshop on Saturday, June 9, at Ingleside Park in Guttenberg. The free event will showcase the work of more than 20 area artists and will offer workshops, live music and food all day long. Billboards, television and radio ads have been visible throughout the month of May, and organizers expect a good turn out on Saturday.

Zoning, food truck, noise issues, occupy council attention

The Guttenberg city council at its regular monthly meeting on May 14 tabled a zoning change request, gave temporary approval to a mobile food truck, considered park board recommendations and reviewed a proposed noise ordinance.

Mayor Bill Frommelt led councilmembers Mick Pierce, Austin Greve, Fred Schaub, Virginia Saeugling and Jane Parker through the evening's agenda; also on hand were city manager Denise Schneider and city attorney Michael Schuster.

River of Music returns June 1

Umbrella Arts has announced the schedule for their upcoming River of Music concert series beginning Friday, June 1. This will be the fifth consecutive summer to celebrate local music with 11 free Friday night concerts in Ingleside Park.

Last year, the series drew nearly 2,000 attendees over the course of the summer with musical groups like Triple Threat, Friends of Backbone Bluegrass, and Uncle Sam’s Band. Many of those bands are returning this summer for the opportunity to play in the bandshell alongside the Mississippi River.

The Guttenberg Press published the City of Guttenberg’s water quality report in its April 25 issue. The Press sat down with public works employee Dan Pierce to delve into this complex report, revealing how the data is gathered and what it means to residents. 

1. What qualifications do the public works staff have in order to test and maintain our water? What is required as far as completing and maintaining those qualifications/certifications?

Guttenberg’s own River Park Cruisers have organized a monthly ‘cruise-in’ at Ingleside Park north of Clayton Ridge Schools on the second Wednesdays in May, June, July and August at 6 p.m. “All car enthusiasts are welcome to bring food, drink and lawn chairs and enjoy the display of cars,” said David Bahls, River Park Cruisers chairperson.

Unlimited Services of Guttenberg is celebrating 15 years in business with reflection and gratitude. The company started in 2003 with a group of owners who are still together today, continuing to evolve as needs change and striving to create a community where individuals participate and achieve their dreams, hopes and desires. The company has grown from five homes and 25 staff to 12 homes and approximately 100 staff. Unlimited Services is a certified provider under the Medicaid HCBS Waiver Programs and is CARF accredited.

Guttenberg crest predicted May 3-4

A late spring in the Upper Midwest delayed the end-of-winter thaw in the watershed of the Mississippi River, and will bring a minor crest at Guttenberg this week.

On Monday, the National Weather Service in LaCrosse, Wis., predicted a crest of 15.3 feet at Guttenberg on May 3-4, followed by a very slow drop in river levels.

Kramers present Our Neighbors, the Amish

Dianne and Don Kramer of Dyersville brought their traveling program, Our Neighbors, the Amish, to the Colesburg library on Thursday, April 26. “We have been giving these programs throughout Iowa and have been so surprised at the interest in the Amish. You are so fortunate to live this close,” said Dianne. “Most English (people who aren’t Amish) have very little interaction with the Amish, and for that reason there is an air of mystery about them,” Dianne told the group that gathered for the presentation.
