Reservations due May 26 for St. Mary/IC alumni banquet

St. Mary/Immaculate Conception alumni committee invites all those who attended St. Mary High School and St. Mary Immaculate Conception Grade School to the annual alumni banquet on  Saturday,  June 3,  at St. Mary’s Brinkmann Hall in Guttenberg.

The Heritage Room  opens at 4 p.m.  Mass will be offered at 5:30 p.m. St. Mary's choir will present a prelude of songs showcasing "music of our heritage" beginning at 5 p.m. Social hour and dinner will follow Mass in Brinkman Hall.  Dinner tickets are $10.

Members of the Guttenberg Rotary Club gathered for their weekly meeting at Big Springs Nature Park along Great River Road north of Guttenberg on Thursday, April 27. New member Dennis McNeal is coordinating a Rotary project to continue improving the park with more visible signage, handrails, upkeep on the Rotary-sponsored park shelter, and potentially even a portable restroom.

$1,000 tree planting grant from Black Hills Energy

Volunteers and community leaders in Guttenberg are partnering with Trees Forever and Black Hills Energy to plant trees that save energy, improve air quality, and reduce stormwater runoff. 

Black Hills Energy and Trees Forever's Power of Trees 25-year partnership awarded Guttenberg with $1,000 for a tree-planting project.

Chamber seeks basket sponsors

The hanging baskets that beautify downtown Guttenberg each summer need sponsors for the coming season.

The Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce's hanging basket committee is now making plans for flowers to be placed on River Park Drive, Schiller Street and at the city marina. 

Monetary help is sought to make the project possible again this year. Each sponsored basket and pot will have a small plaque that recognizes the supporting businesses or individuals. The investment per basket/pot is $45.

Mental health awareness month May 16 mental health first aid course filling fast

One in five Americans will be affected by a mental health condition in their lifetime. Guttenberg Municipal Hospital and County Social Services are hosting a free 8-hour course on mental health first aid (MHFA) for members of the public on Tuesday, May 16, at the Guttenberg Marina Center, 715 S. River Park Dr. 

Mental Health First Aid is an eight-hour training course designed to give members of the public key skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis.

Once a cow pasture, now the centerpiece of Guttenberg – Ingleside Park has been loved by generations of locals and travelers. Just as the town is intertwined with the Mississippi River, it is nearly impossible to describe the city of Guttenberg without mentioning Ingleside Park. Yet in the early 1900s, the park so integral to the city’s character was thick with weeds, garbage, and dairy cows. In 1902 a group of eight visionary women formed the Ingleside Club and began to transform the pasture into the three-mile park it is today.

Clayton County Supervisors pass off-road utility vehicle ordinance

The Clayton County Board of Supervisors has approved an ordinance that allows off-road utility vehicles to operate on county gravel roads, except level C roadways. A person can also operate a vehicle on a paved county road only so far as to reach a permissable county gravel road. The ordinance does not apply to all-terrain vehicles.

GMH employee retires after nearly 44 years

Intravenous fluids (IV’s) were given in small glass bottles. Water was sterilized by hospital staff in a distiller. Smoking was allowed in hospitals. This past month, the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital (GMH) community said “Farewell” and “Good luck” to one of its long-time employees, Marie Torrey, who remembers working around the traditional ways.

On June 7, 1972, Torrey began working in Central Supply and Laundry at GMH. Shortly after, she became the Materials Manager and has done that ever since. In her position, she was in charge of ordering and receiving materials, acting as a resource for department needs, and sometimes distributing materials around GMH departments.

An Elkader native who has performed solo acts in Guttenberg will tour the Midwest this year for over 100 shows with the band Honeywise. Sophia Landis and Honeywise are scheduled to perform at the Elkader Opera House on Friday, April 28, for her home crowd.

“I started piano when I began preschool as a three-year-old. At first I wanted to quit lessons because it was hard, but my parents wouldn't let me and said I would thank them later. Throughout my childhood my parents were extremely supportive and tried to give me as many opportunities as they could to learn more instruments and be involved with chorus, band, musical theater, and any other musical outlet that came my way,” Landis explained.
