Combat Veterans 4th Annual Benefit Ride/Cruise July 7 & 8

Registration for the 4th Annual Combat Veterans Ride/Cruise, sponsored by Eastern Iowa Chapter 39-3, will be 5-9 p.m. Friday, July 7, for the 11 a.m. pre-ride and 7-10:45 a.m. Saturday, July 8, at the Elkport Campground for the ride/cruise. 

One donation of $15 per bike/car gets you everything both days, including food. The ride, open to motorcycles, cars and trucks, will make stops in Wadena, Monona, Guttenberg, and Colesburg.

The River of Music concert in Guttenberg this Friday, June 30, will include a short celebration of Ingleside Club’s 115 years.    

The club was established in 1902, when eight Guttenberg women decided to beautify the riverfront by turning a cow pasture into Ingleside Park.

The iconic summer Stars and Stripes Celebration, hosted by the Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce, is scheduled to take place this Saturday, kicking off with the Farmer’s Market at 8 a.m. on the 400 block of South River Park Drive, and ending in the timeless custom of fireworks over the Mississippi River. The third annual Interact 5K Walk/Run will also be held that morning at 8 a.m., with registration beginning at 7 a.m. at the gazebo in Ingleside Park.

The Stars and Stripes committee has chosen to honor Charles and Joanne Finch as the Super Seniors for this year’s celebration on July 1. “The Finches are hard working, model community members,” said Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce Director Emily Sadewasser. “Their contributions to local business and culture over their shared lives are immeasurable.”

Facility improvements to begin; new teacher hired

The Clayton Ridge School Board met in regular session on Thursday, June 8, at 7 p.m. in the middle school library.  Members in attendance were John Heying, Ellen Johnson, Mike Finnegan and Kathy Ihde. Christine Aulwes, Jason Reimer and Alicia Helle were absent. Also in attendance were Superintendent Shane Wahls, Principal Andy Peterson, Steve Hoff, Dave Schlueter, Mary Seifert, Bob Bodish, Darrin Troester and Mary Ann Troester.

Payment to BLDD in the amount of $38,219.49 was approved for schematic design and design development at the Guttenberg site pending clarification on several cost items.

Fatality following one-vehicle accident west of Guttenberg

A Guttenberg teenager has died following a one-car rollover accident on Monday, June 12, west of Guttenberg. Emma Hefel, 16, died Thursday, June 15, at University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City.

She was one of three teens injured in the accident that took place at approximately 4 p.m. a week ago Monday on Garber Road, just west of 310th Street.

Fireworks legal in Iowa, but still illegal in Guttenberg

Early last month, Iowa Governor Terry Branstad signed a new law into effect that allows fireworks to be sold throughout the state to buyers age 18 and up. According to the bill, fireworks companies with permanent buildings can sell fireworks June 1 through July 8 and Dec. 1 through Jan. 3, in conjunction with the Fourth of July and New Year’s celebrations. Fireworks companies with temporary buildings, or tents, can only sell fireworks June 13 through July 8.

Sisters Emily Sadewasser and Molly Moser have teamed up with Vinton, Iowa native Stephanie Svoboda to create Starving Artists, an eclectic shop featuring handmade artwork, fun antiques, and one-of-a-kind designs. The storefront will open for business at 222 S. River Park Drive, Guttenberg, on Saturday, June 24, with a grand opening set for Friday, July 14.

Volunteers, donations sought for Stars and Stripes event

Guttenberg Chamber of Commerce committee members are gearing up for the community's annual Stars and Stripes celebration on Saturday, July 1. 

Monetary donations are currently being sought for the fireworks display that evening. Estimated cost of this year's fireworks is $4,400. "Your contribution will help us to provide our residents and visitors with a dazzling show to remember," said Emily Sadewasser, Chamber director.

Driftless Youth Theater selects actors for 2017 season

Auditions for a new youth theater group in Guttenberg were held last month, and eight children ages 10-15 have been selected to participate in the Driftless Youth Theater 2017 Summer Arts Ensemble. Participants will begin meeting this month on Friday afternoons at River Park Place in Guttenberg.
