Guttenberg native on Hands of Love trip to Uganda

Guttenberg native Jenny Elsinger recently traveled to Africa with the organization Hands of Love USA  to volunteer at their schools in Uganda. This is what she had to say about her life changing trip:

“I’ve been aware of Hands of Love for awhile now because my nephew’s sister-in-law, Nora Charlesworth, is the director of the American fundraising division. She took her sister, Joanna Finch, on a mission trip to Uganda a few years ago, and I told them I would be interested in going along sometime if I could ever get it to work with my schedule.”

Council hires new city manager

Following a closed session of the city council at its regular monthly meeting on Aug. 7, Denise Schneider accepted an offer for the city manager position. The position has been vacant since the departure of Mary Willett in July 2016.

Terms of Schneider's employment agreement provide for an annual salary of $63,000 for a three-year term with three-year renewal. The residency requirement was waived. She will begin her duties on Sept. 11.

The Wave of the Future will make a splash in Guttenberg this week, as residents will receive literature in the mail about the Guttenberg pool project. Next week, Wave of the Future Campaign Cabinet volunteers will begin visiting their friends and neighbors to answer questions and invite people to help. The neighborhood outreach will include the rural service area as well as Garnavillo.

17th annual fly-in potluck Aug. 19

For the 17th consecutive year, Abel Island will host its annual Fly-in, Float-in, Potluck and Barbecue on Saturday, Aug. 19, from 12 noon to 3 p.m.   

“This event is open to all airplanes, whether they are members of the Island Aviation Association, or not,” said organizer and island resident Gary Fisher. “This is one of the limited number of times where island members, as well as Guttenberg area residents, may invite their pilot friends to fly in and enjoy our island without being a full dues-paying aviation association member.”

Human trafficking exploits others for labor, sex

"The faces of human trafficking are more common than you'd think," said Mariana Vaga, a human-trafficking specialist with Cedar Valley Friends of the Family who spoke at the Guttenberg library on Aug. 3 as part of her mission to raise public awareness of the crime.

Human trafficking victims can be found anywhere — from major metropolitan areas to small Iowa communities. The victims look like anyone — they can be male, female, all ages and all demographics.

Two file for three school board seats

Incumbents Mike Finnegan and Kathy Ihde are seeking re-election. The third seat, currently held by Jason Reimer, can be filled by voter write-in.

Civic leaders needed to run for office

The seats of park board members Helene Kuempel, Shane Anderson and Jim Johnston; hospital board members Doug Reimer and Sue Osterhaus and city councilors Fred Schaub, Steve Friedlein and Virginia Saeugling, as well as the mayoral position, will be up for election this fall in Guttenberg, and the documents required to run for those offices are now available at the city office, the county office, and online.

“When we moved to Guttenberg over three decades ago, Guttenberg Municipal Pool was a well-functioning institution. My kids and I were regular visitors there. Both boys learned to swim there and I have trained at the pool for several swimming events,” said Dr. Jim Osterhaus, a Guttenberg businessman who’s been named co-chair of the Wave of the Future campaign cabinet.

More torrential rain, flooding hit southern Clayton County

The hot and humid weather last week spawned severe storms that rolled through Clayton County, again inundating the area with heavy rains. Above, a birds-eye view of Turkey River at Millville shows the extent of flooding caused by thunderstorms on July 21-22. At the left is the Highway 52 bridge spanning the Turkey River. Mother Nature delivered another one-two punch to Clayton County last week in the form of severe storms and torrential rains on Wednesday, July 19, and Friday, July 21.

The severe weather came on the heels of a storm system that delivered 10+ inches of rain in southern Clayton County on July 11-12.

Lyme disease strikes local teen

Though it isn’t routine, Dr. Jeff Hoffmann of Cornerstone Family Practice says he’s been seeing more cases of Lyme disease in his office. 

Spread by the bite of an infected blacklegged tick, the bacteria that causes Lyme disease infects an estimated 300,000 people each year in the United States. Symptoms begin between three and 30 days after a bite, and 70 to 80 percent of people who’ve been infected will develop a rash. Fevers may also occur.
