The tax levy for Clayton County residents will decrease for 2015-2016 under a proposed budget that will be presented at a public hearing March 9. The meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the county government building, 600 Gunder Road, Elkader.

Monarch butterfly decline signals need for landscape ethic

Starmont elementary students display a monarch butterfly they captured and tagged in the school’s milkweed prairie as part of a Clayton County Conservation program.

In the autumn of 1813, American ornithologist John James Audubon watched a flock of passenger pigeons fly over the Ohio countryside.  He described the numbers as so numerous it darkened the sky and took more than three days for the entire flock to pass overhead.  It’s estimated that three to five billion passenger pigeons were in the United States when Europeans arrived in North America.  In nearly the blink of an eye, the species went from being one of the most abundant birds in the world to complete extinction in 1914.  This astonishing elimination of a seemingly bountiful species was attributed to overhunting and loss of habitat.

Elkader’s newest resident is an award-winning artist and writer with a unique claim to fame.

 “I can read one of my books in four languages, simultaneously,” says Arthur Geisert, a mischievous smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “No other author in the world can say that.”

Stunning Transformation

One of the most stunning transformations of a downtown property is a building not included in Elkader’s façade restoration project.

The former Elkader Dry Cleaners, located at 116 North Main Street, was painstakingly restored over the course of several months. New owner Arthur Geisert hired local contractor Greg Anderson, owner of Anderson Construction Company, to do the work.

Elkader still leads county in sales

A recent Iowa State University study puts Elkader at the top of the list for total taxable sales, well ahead of surrounding communities.

According to an Iowa State University study, Elkader remains the retail mecca of Clayton County. That comes as little surprise to established business owners or newcomers like Dawn Medberry, owner of JEM Salon and Spa.
