What’s cookin’? Three area cooks find creative outlets

Deputy Leaving

There will soon be a new deputy sheriff in town.

Clayton County Deputy Sheriff Michael Aschinger has resigned his position effective April 25.  He and his family, which includes his wife, April, and their children Autumn, 5, Bria, 3, and James, 1, are moving to Utah. Aschinger will continue his law enforcement career there.

School start date. New law: No classes before August 23

The school start date debate is over.

Governor Terry Branstad signed a bill Friday afternoon setting August 23 as the earliest date that school can start in Iowa. Branstad described the bill as a compromise that will resolve the issue for the long term.

When I was first asked to do a story on Pastor Albert L. Hock, I thought it would be a fun and easy story to do. On a notepad I wrote inane questions like “when did you become a pastor? Where? Name some of the places to which you’ve been assigned. What was the funniest incident you can recall as a preacher?”

Five local artists have been working since last August on something they hope will become a signature event for Elkader. The women are planning an “Art in the Park” weekend August 22 and 23 in Founders Park.

25 years of fishing fun

An event that started several years ago as a joke has become an Elkader fixture. 

The Redhorse Fisheree, which celebrates its 25th year in May, was lightheartedly suggested by a small group of local people in response to a big bass fishing tournament.

For Nika Tipsword, returning to Northeast Iowa has been a double homecoming: She’s living again in her hometown, Guttenberg, and she’s re-engaged with the Opera House Players, the theater group that years ago sparked an interest in the stage, an interest that’s become her life’s work.

Since the mid-20th century, elaborate practical jokes have be printed in newspapers and broadcast on TV and radio. Computer technology, especially the Internet, has made it possible to fool and embarrass a wider audience than ever before.
