Offering an eclectic mix of professional services has already paid off for new business owners Naomi Tegeler Hulteng and Casey Hulteng. In addition to building a client base looking for music, photography and graphic design assistance, the couple has cleared the first hurdle to a possible $20,000 grant. They recently edged out five other companies for a regional Main Street Open 4 Business award worth $8,000. They’ll compete for the bigger prize later this month.

Mike Kilen

Des Moines Register

She was writing book reviews for a Sioux City newspaper, which even 10 years ago wasn’t considered eye-grabbing material for the masses. An editor asked her to take on a series of cold cases — unsolved murders — the kind you see on TV shows. People love that stuff.

By Pam Reinig

Though nearly a dozen people were hard at work in St. Joseph’s Hall on a recent Wednesday afternoon, the only sounds breaking the silence were the soft whirr of two sewing machines and the gentle hiss of a steam iron. The group—three adults and a handful of youth—were intently (and quietly) focused on their tasks: ironing, cutting and stitching together fabric to make drawstring bags for youngsters living 8,000 miles away in eastern Africa.

A surprise discovery at the Carter House Museum in Elkader gives a unique insight into small town life in the 1920s.  A forgotten collection of glass plate photos was found in a cabinet in the museum. The photos show the interiors of local stores and the people who owned them, as well as the customers that frequented them, something that was rather rare for the era.
