Marquette getting new street banners

The city of Marquette will soon have new street banners. The city council approved the purchase of 24 banners, at a cost of $2,352, at its Jan. 16 meeting.

The Marquette Action Club has agreed to pay for half the cost of the banners, which will be sepia-toned and feature over half a dozen images related to Marquette, like the railroad, wine, fishing and antiques.

Wellness committee welcomes input from community

At MFL MarMac, the focus is on more than just educating students. It’s also about ensuring their health and well-being. That’s where the district’s wellness committee comes into play.

Made up of teachers, administrators, nursing and dietary staff, and community members, the group meets quarterly to discuss the school’s goals for maintaining and improving the health and well-being of students through education, nutrition and fitness.

Increased awareness, prevention efforts cut down on bullying

Reports of bullying at MFL MarMac Elementary have continued to drop in the last two years, a trend guidance counselor Kurt Gaylor attributes to increased awareness and prevention efforts.

Gaylor, who spoke at the school board meeting Jan. 8, said there were 79 reports of bullying in the 2014-2015 school year, and the number grew to 133 in 2015-2016. Last year, however, the total fell to 45. And so far this school year, just one report has been submitted.

“The totals have gone down a lot,” he said. “We’ve done things to help.”

New street banners brighten McGregor

McGregor’s Main Street got a bit brighter last week, as new banners were hung from the street light poles up and down the city’s historic main drag.

Three different designs are featured, including a red, orange and yellow banner emblazoned with “McGregor Historic District, Settled 1837.” Four images are shown on this banner: a sand bottle, in recognition of famous McGregor sand artist Andrew Clemens; a clown, in celebration of the city’s connection to the Ringling Brothers; the Clan MacGregor crest; and the paddle wheel symbol representing the Great River Road.

DNR to discuss CWD in Harpers Ferry and Elkader ahead of deer tissue collection effort

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) will hold a special scientific collection effort Jan. 20-28, in targeted areas of Allamakee and Clayton counties near where chronic wasting disease (CWD) has been confirmed in wild Iowa deer. The effort will be discussed during two public meetings on Thursday, Jan. 18 – one at 2 p.m. at the Harpers Ferry Community Center and the other at 6:30 p.m. at the Elkader Keystone AEA building. 

Chronic wasting disease is a neurologic disease of deer and elk, belonging to the family of diseases known as transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs), or prion diseases. Though it shares certain features with other TSEs like bovine spongiform encephalopathy (Mad Cow Disease) or scrapie in sheep, it is a distinct disease apparently affecting only deer, moose and elk. It is always fatal.

When ice is nice

Marquette bench has skating rink for first time in over a decade

For the first time in over a decade, local families can enjoy ice skating on the Marquette bench. 

Just before the new year, the city’s public works employees, Jason Sullivan and John Hines, created the ice rink on the basketball court at the city park. Over 125 sand bags were filled and placed around the court’s perimeter, holding down a large sheet of plastic, which was then covered in water. Cold temperatures helped solidify the ice.

At its Jan. 2 meeting, the Monona Council reviewed preliminary concept plans developed for an extension of the city’s Butterfly Trail. 

Starting at the Butterfly Garden, on West Davis Street, the trail extension will run along Bulldog Boulevard, cross 125th Street/West Spruce Street, then parallel Highway 18/52 to reach Gateway Park, at the town’s entrance.

Awards banquet honors conservation efforts of farm families

The Clayton Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) honored the outstanding conservation efforts of local farm families during the annual awards banquet held Dec. 7, at the Central State Bank Community Room in Elkader. This year’s award winners showcase a variety of conservation efforts, and each recipient provides an outstanding example of what can be done to protect the natural resources everyone enjoys in northeast Iowa. The local awards program is co-sponsored by the Clayton County Farm Bureau.

Rural Monona home a total loss following Jan. 4 fire

A rural Monona home has been labeled a complete loss, following a fire Jan. 4.

The Monona Fire Department was called to 13768 Golden Ave., east of Monona, at 9:55 a.m., for a report of a house fire. Firefighters arrived on scene to find the home completely engulfed, according to Monona Fire Chief Dave Smith. The home was being remodeled, and was not occupied at the time, he added.

Approximately 50 firefighters remained at the scene until noon, battling not just the blaze, but temperatures hovering around 0 degrees. Monona fire trucks could be seen making numerous trips back and forth to the site, transporting water.

Smith said the home is a complete loss. No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Preparing for college can be tricky.

“You might be asking, ‘Am I ready for college? What do I do? What about schedules and ACT tests?’” remarked MFL MarMac High School Principal Larry Meyer.

In an effort to answer some of these important questions for current students, the school welcomed back 11 recent MFL MarMac graduates for a panel discussion.
