Charles E. 'Chuck' Peterman

Charles “Chuck” Eugene Peterman, 71, of Elkader, passed away Tuesday, July 28, 2020, at the Guttenberg Hospital. He was born June 27, 1949, on the family farm, rural Volga, to Forrest “Pete” and Mary Murray Peterman. He attended Central Community Schools and graduated with the Class of 1967.

Chuck served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, from May 7, 1969, to March 5, 1972. He was trained to be a Redeye Gunner, receiving a National Defense Service Medal and sharpshooter commendations.

Elkader Fire Department gets temporary rescue boat launch site

The Elkader Fire Department recently conducted a Turkey River rescue drill at the new temporary access landing behind the school.

Over the previous two years, since obtaining a rescue boat from the government, the Elkader Fire Department (EFD) has conducted between four and five river rescues. But it was a recent Turkey River rescue conducted by the EFD that revealed some logistical troubles for the department’s rescue boat operations, namely the ability to put the rescue boat in the water in a timely manner under the constraints of the current launch access points.

Over 1,700 4-H, FFA exhibits entered in next week's Achievement Show

A Clayton County 4-H and FFA Achievement Show will take place next week, as an alternative for the county fair. The event will give local youth an opportunity to showcase the hard work they’ve put into their projects. (File photo)

The Clayton County Extension Council, Youth Development Committee and Extension staff have put together a Clayton County 4-H and FFA Achievement Show that will take place next week at the Clayton County Fairgrounds in National.

The event is an alternative for the Clayton County Fair, which was postponed due to COVID-19 restrictions and safety concerns, and will give local youth an alternative to showcase the hard work they’ve put into their projects.

Spectators for the event will be limited. To protect the health and safety of those in attendance, the Achievement Show will follow Iowa Department of Public Health and CDC recommendations for social distancing, handwashing and sanitization.

Bridge work a bit behind schedule due to increased amount of deteriorated concrete

The U.S. Highway 18 Bridge project consists of milling approximately two and one-fourth inches of concrete from the bridge deck. Areas of deterioration are then marked out on the remaining deck surface and workers remove these areas with jackhammers, explained project leader Ralph Liegel. Work on the eastbound lane of the western portion of the U.S. Highway 18 Bridge connecting Marquette and Prairie du Chien is nearing completion.

“The prime contractor, Zenith Tech, Inc., still has to finish up a few things under the eastern bridge, but most of the work is concentrated on the western bridge now,” by Marquette, said Ralph Liegel with Jewell Associates Engineers, Inc., the project leader who is overseeing construction work on behalf of the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

MFL MarMac will start school year with ‘hybrid’ learning component

MFL MarMac intends to start the school year on Aug. 24 with on-site learning for all students who are able to attend in-person, while also incorporating a hybrid component.

According to the district’s Return to Learn plan, which was released last week, that means MFL MarMac will provide four days per week of on-site instruction on Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Friday, then continuous learning, where students learn from home, on Wednesdays. This will last through at least the month of September.

Fair Weather Riders enjoy sociability, northeast Iowa views on weekly bike ride

The Motor Mill Trail project recently netted donations from several local entities, including $5,000 from FreedomBank and $2,000 from both Alpine Communications and the Slagel Family Fund.

The funding boost comes as CJ Moyna & Sons, Inc., is slated to begin construction on the trail in August. That work will be completed for $851,952, which, paired with engineering, will bring the total project cost to just over $1 million.

Monona Council, PD discuss curfew

The city of Monona is looking to stiffen the penalty for first-time offenders of its curfew rules for minors.

“When you issue a first offense, it’s nothing,” police chief Jo Amsden told the city council at its July 20 meeting. “It would be nice to have the ability to charge them with something.”

Currently, minors 17 and under are not allowed to be out past 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, or past midnight on Friday and Saturday nights, unless involved with a school function.

Amsden said many youth—and their parents—remain unaware of the restrictions.

Five MFL MarMac softball players have earned Upper Iowa all-conference honors. Lauren Haberichter and Jordan Schubert were each named to the first team and Keri Picha to the second team, while Brinan Berger and Abby Schellhorn picked up honorable mention recognition.

Haberichter, a sophomore, was the Bulldogs’ top pitcher. Over 73.2 innings, she had a record of 10-4—the second best win total in the conference—and a 3.71 ERA, which put her fourth in the Upper Iowa. Opponents were held to a .232 average and struck out 93 times.

The MFL MarMac baseball team had five of its players selected to the 2020 Upper Iowa all-conference teams. Cedrick Drahn received first-team honors, while JT Stocker and Ethan Stubbs were named to the second team. Kaleb Tilson and Karter Decker picked up honorable mention status.

Drahn, the team’s senior shortstop, hit .346 in 52 at bats for the Bulldogs. He tallied 18 hits (including a home run) and 13 walks, and had a .507 on-base percentage—tied for fourth best in the conference. Drahn was second on the team in RBIs, with 12, stole 11 bases and scored 18 runs.
