Grant will support concept design for McGregor community center

Just a few short months after a destructive storm, the community of McGregor is starting to rebuild.

Restore McGregor recently received a $10,000 grant from The Native Fund to support a concept design for a community center. The potential building would be located at the former site of the INKspiration Tattoo property, at 330 Main St., which was reduced to a pile of debris when an EF-1 tornado ripped through McGregor on July 19. The property was donated to the city of McGregor by former owners Fred Petrie and Melanie San Fillippo.

Candidate Profiles: Marquette Council

Marquette voters will have to decide between six candidates to fill three open seats on the Marquette City Council when they head to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 7. Included on the ballot are Steve Eagle, Cindy Sharp Halvorson and John Ries, who are all incumbents, as well as Rinda Ferguson, David Schneider and Ryan P. Young. The three highest vote-getters will serve four-year terms on the council. The candidates recently shared their thoughts on some of the issues that are important to Marquette.

Over $36,000 in Restore McGregor funds awarded

A five-member committee met earlier this month to award a total of $36,376.50 from the Restore McGregor 2017 Tornado Fund.

The fund was started through the Clayton County Foundation for the Future immediately following the July 19 tornado, and, as of Oct. 12, had accumulated $52,921.34 in contributions.

“The money came from all over the nation, from New York to California,” noted McGregor Deputy Clerk Duane Boelman.

The committee considered 50 applications, eventually approving 42.

Monona Historical Society has kept community’s history alive for 50 years

This photo was taken on May 29, 1971, at the opening of the Monona Historical Museum on South Egbert Street. In November, the Monona Historical Society will celebrate its 50th anniversary.

The Monona Historical Society was organized in November 1967, after a group of community members felt the need to preserve the area’s history and artifacts for future generations. 

The group’s first elected officers included Miss Willa Helwig as president, Miss Ploma Blaha as vice president and Mrs. Elmer Marting Jr. as secretary-treasurer. Donald Gray, Mrs. LeRoy Darby, Mrs. Melvin Beimfohr, Otmar Bruns, Mrs. Roger A. Halvorson, Miss Elsie Possehl and Mrs. LeRoy Thompson served as directors.

Life-long residents to share memories at museum event

Those at the McGregor Historical Museum meet so many people from all over the world and become acquainted with new neighbors who have decided to adopt McGregor as their new hometown. But for the guest speakers at the museum’s annual event, McGregor has been their hometown for decades. 

Visit the museum on Friday, Oct. 27, at 6:30 p.m., for an opportunity to listen to and share stories of McGregor life from the decades 1940 to 1960. The evening will begin with stories and memories from Bob Eggen, Alice Staples, Arlys Denning and Jim Hendrickson. The second part of the evening will allow audience members to contribute something special from their personal biographies.

Candidate Profiles: Marquette Mayor

Marquette voters will have a choice between two mayoral candidates when they head to the polls Tuesday, Nov. 7, for this year’s city election. Incumbent Larry Breuer, who’s served since early 2016, will face challenger Stephen J. Weipert for a two-year term. Here, the two candidates share their thoughts on some of the issues important to Marquette residents.

Larry Breuer has two children, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was born and raised in Grant County, Wis., and has been a Marquette resident for 25 years. He’s been employed at Cabela’s for the past 10 years. Prior to that, he had his own building, rehab and rental business in Marquette.

Four candidates are vying for three seats on the McGregor Council in this year’s city election, held Tuesday, Nov. 7. Those on the ballot include incumbents Charles Carroll, Janet Hallberg and Rogeta Halvorson, as well as newcomer Sally K. Schneider. The three candidates with the most votes will serve four-year terms. They recently shared their thoughts on McGregor with the North Iowa Times.

 

Charles Carroll

Charles Carroll grew up on a family farm outside McGregor and graduated from Mar-Mac. He worked for IBM, as a software engineer, for 26 years, before moving back to McGregor in 2004.

Celebrate the restoration of Monona’s 101-year-old city park bandstand at a re-dedication event this Saturday, Oct. 21, from 3 to 5 p.m.

The bandstand has served as the center of the community since 1916, when it was constructed in the center of the park by Frank Montgomery, at a cost of $140.

Construction was the culmination of a several-year fundraising push.

DNR planning public hearing in November regarding Walz Energy facility

An Oct. 11 public meeting to discuss a stormwater construction permit for the Walz Energy facility east of Monona was canceled last week, just a day before the meeting was set to take place in Elkader.

“We decided, given the level of comments, that we were legally obligated to have a public hearing instead,” said Iowa DNR Stormwater Coordinator Joe Griffin as to why the meeting was canceled. 

Griffin said his office received around a dozen comments from the public.

Overland Group requests annexation of land for Dollar General store

The Overland Group hasn’t given up on bringing a Dollar General store to Monona.

The Monona Council, at its Oct. 16 meeting, considered a request by the group for voluntary annexation of land at the intersection of Highway 18/52 and 125th Street, for construction of a Dollar General store.

The parcel is currently privately owned.

“Overland intends to purchase it, but they don’t own it yet,” said city administrator Dan Canton.
