Two decades ago, after years of watching trash clutter the Mississippi River near his hometown of Hampton, Ill, a young Chad Pregracke felt he needed to do something. So, he set out in a single boat, plucking trash from the river banks and shoreline. Soon, with the help of sponsorships, media attention and volunteers, Pregracke’s venture grew.

Chamber, art center, library share updates

Several local entities—the McGregor-Marquette Chamber of Commerce, McGregor-Marquette Center for the Arts and McGregor Public Library—went before the McGregor Council Jan. 17, sharing their accomplishments from 2017, as well as their plans for 2018.

Executive director Kristie Austin said the chamber gained a dozen new members in 2017, bringing total membership to 113.

Let the Progressive Dinner be your valentine delight

Let the McGregor-Marquette Chamber of Commerce’s 16th annual Progressive Dinner be your “valentine delight.” Held from 4 to 9 p.m. on Feb. 10, the Saturday before Valentine’s Day, the Progressive Dinner will feature food and fun from several of the chamber member cafés, in addition to bed and breakfast establishments.

The menu will include hors d’oeuvres served at The Corner Shoppe, in Garnavillo. Roasted red pepper with gnocchi soup from By the Spoonful will be offered at Old Man River, in McGregor. Little Switzerland Inn, in McGregor, will host the salad portion of the meal, featuring spring greens with fruit. The main course—stuffed pork chop with apple and coleslaw, or beef or shrimp kabob—will be served at McGregor’s Stauer House Bed and Breakfast. It will be back to Old Man River for dessert, where couples can enjoy “heart delights” from The Local Oven.

Walz Energy receives its NPDES permit

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources issued a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit to Walz Energy on Jan. 12, officially paving the way for construction to continue on the 10,000-head cattle feedlot and biogas operation located east of Monona.

The decision was made despite overwhelming public opposition to not only issuance of the permit, but the project itself, at a hearing held by the DNR in Elkader on Nov. 29.

McGregor Council engages consulting services to explore potential development options for former Holiday Shores site

It’s been over two and a half years since the Holiday Shores Motel was closed, then torn down, on the McGregor riverfront. Two years since the council denied a request from the property owners, Trilogy Partners LLC, to re-zone the property to allow for the construction of condominiums.

Yet, even after a 2016 hotel/motel feasibility study commissioned by the city of McGregor showed favorable potential for a new hotel in the community, the location remains vacant.

Monona Police see drop in cases, traffic stops

The number of cases the Monona Police Department handled last year dropped slightly from the previous year, noted police chief Jo Amsden, who shared the department’s 2017 data at the city council’s Jan. 15 meeting.

In 2016, 353 cases were handled, said Amsden, compared to 327 in 2017.

Most complaints came in on Thursdays or Fridays, she said, meaning the activity likely occurred on a Wednesday.

“Saturdays and Sundays are the quietest,” Amsden shared.

Marquette getting new street banners

The city of Marquette will soon have new street banners. The city council approved the purchase of 24 banners, at a cost of $2,352, at its Jan. 16 meeting.

The Marquette Action Club has agreed to pay for half the cost of the banners, which will be sepia-toned and feature over half a dozen images related to Marquette, like the railroad, wine, fishing and antiques.

Wellness committee welcomes input from community

At MFL MarMac, the focus is on more than just educating students. It’s also about ensuring their health and well-being. That’s where the district’s wellness committee comes into play.

Made up of teachers, administrators, nursing and dietary staff, and community members, the group meets quarterly to discuss the school’s goals for maintaining and improving the health and well-being of students through education, nutrition and fitness.

Increased awareness, prevention efforts cut down on bullying

Reports of bullying at MFL MarMac Elementary have continued to drop in the last two years, a trend guidance counselor Kurt Gaylor attributes to increased awareness and prevention efforts.

Gaylor, who spoke at the school board meeting Jan. 8, said there were 79 reports of bullying in the 2014-2015 school year, and the number grew to 133 in 2015-2016. Last year, however, the total fell to 45. And so far this school year, just one report has been submitted.

“The totals have gone down a lot,” he said. “We’ve done things to help.”

New street banners brighten McGregor

McGregor’s Main Street got a bit brighter last week, as new banners were hung from the street light poles up and down the city’s historic main drag.

Three different designs are featured, including a red, orange and yellow banner emblazoned with “McGregor Historic District, Settled 1837.” Four images are shown on this banner: a sand bottle, in recognition of famous McGregor sand artist Andrew Clemens; a clown, in celebration of the city’s connection to the Ringling Brothers; the Clan MacGregor crest; and the paddle wheel symbol representing the Great River Road.
