MFL MarMac board voices support for fieldhouse, elementary addition project

The MFL MarMac School Board, at its Oct. 14 meeting, voiced support for the district’s proposed fieldhouse and facilities improvement project.

Plans currently include constructing one full competition gym, which could be divided into two full-size practice courts, in the area behind the music addition at the Monona Center, where the tennis courts are currently located. The roughly 32,000-square-foot facility is projected to hold 1,200 people, making it large enough to host district events. The fieldhouse would also feature a walking/running track that could be accessible to the public, as well as a commons area, concession stand for both indoor and outdoor events and bathrooms and locker rooms.

No temporary fix for McGregor sewer issues

The city of McGregor’s hopes to find a temporary fix for its sewer infiltration and inflow problems have been dashed. 

Mark Davy, with Davy Engineering, said his company has considered four or five different alternatives to give the community some breathing room until a larger-scale sewer improvement project for the 100 to 600 blocks of Main Street can be completed, but none will remedy the situation, which has resulted in eventual wastewater discharges to the Mississippi River.

Candidate Profiles: MFL MarMac School Board

Voters in the MFL MarMac School District will have a choice between four candidates to fill three open seats on the school board when they head to the polls on Tuesday, Nov. 5. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Voters in the Farmersburg and Wagner townships and the city of Farmersburg will vote at the Farmersburg Community Center; voters in the Giard, Grand Meadow and Monona townships and the cities of Luana and Monona will vote at the Monona Community Center; and the voters in Mendon Township and the cities of Marquette and McGregor will vote at the Marquette Community Center. Three incumbents— Sharon Greener, Tonya Meyer and Collin Stubbs—are on the ballot, and they are joined by newcomer Roberta Hass. The highest vote-getters will serve four-year terms on the board. The candidates recently shared their thoughts on some topics regarding MFL MarMac Schools.

Monona Chamber and Economic Development holds first annual dinner

Monona Chamber and Economic Development, Inc. (MCED) Board President Linda Knockel welcomed attendees to the first annual dinner and awards celebration Oct. 15.

MFL MarMac Superintendent Dr. Dale Crozier was one of three featured speakers at the MCED event.

Candace Drahn spoke about M's Machine and how MCED helps the company.

Nate Trappe, with Allen Roofing and Construction, was one of seven businesses honored for milestone anniversaries. Allen Roofing celebrates 20 years.

Todd Balekos accepted a plaque honoring Quillin's for its 70th anniversary.

Monona Chamber and Economic Development, Inc. (MCED), held its first annual dinner and celebration Oct. 15, at MJ’s Bar and Grill.

“We’re here to celebrate the chamber and economic development. It’s also an anniversary party, “ shared MCED Board President Linda Knockel, who noted that MCED is marking its 10th anniversary of serving the Monona community this year. 2019 is also Rogeta Halvorson’s fifth year as MCED’s executive director.

MCED, said Knockel, is “here to promote and help businesses grow.” Events like this allow business owners and employees to connect with one another and celebrate their own successes.

“We’re all in business, and we’re all busy,” she said, “but it’s good to get together and see what’s going on.”

Mark Pfeiffer

Mark Andrew Pfeiffer, 65, of Terre Haute, Ind., passed away on Sunday, Sept. 22, 2019, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, surrounded by his loving family. 

Mark was born in Pensacola, Fla., on Dec. 10, 1953, to U.S. Navy Dr. Donald W. and Marlys Pfeiffer.

Fountain returns to Triangle Park

The cast iron fountain that’s been a staple in McGregor’s Triangle Park since the early 1990s returned to its rightful home at the end of September.

The fountain was removed from the downtown park late last fall for some much-needed repairs.

“It was tipped over in the tornado,” resulting in damage to the base and plumbing, said park board president Maria Brummel. “But even before that, there was a plan to sand blast and powder coat it. It was really coated with heavy mineral deposits from the water.”

UTV riders hoping for more freedom to travel, stop within Monona

UTV riders are hoping for more freedom to travel and make stops within the city of Monona. On Oct. 7, a group of residents approached the city council about updating the community’s ordinance regarding the use of all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles.

“We’d like to discuss why we can’t go anywhere in town like most of the surrounding cities do,” said Pat Echard. “Why did we decide not to do that?”

Candidate Profiles: McGregor Council

Marquette eyes solutions for Pleasant Ridge Road flooding issues

The city of Marquette hopes reworking the ditch and extending a culvert along Pleasant Ridge Road will help ease some of the flooding issues in the Twin Bluffs neighborhood during major rain events.

At the Oct. 8 council meeting, public works director Jason Sullivan detailed plans to install a 10-foot-by-48-foot old tanker car at the south end of the culvert near the Doll property to prevent erosion that’s compromising the road and sidewalk.

The tanker car, which the council agreed to purchase for $6,500 from Clayton County Recycling, will be the same size as the current culvert, said Sullivan.

A GRRRReat return for iconic fall event

Mother and daughter Janet and Mattie Hallberg flipped the first pancakes at the GRRRR breakfast. Proceeds from that portion of the event will go toward adding a splash pad at McGregor’s Turner Park.

Husband and wife Michael McGrane and Amanda Watters, who came all the way from Boston, were the top male and female 5K finishers at GRRRR. Amanda is six months pregnant.

Roughly 150 people braved the rain and cold on Oct. 5 for the first Great River Road - Road Race (GRRRR) and breakfast since 2002. The date was nearly 40 years after the original event was held at Pikes Peak State Park in 1981. 

At its height, GRRRR drew over 600 entrants to the area, who were attracted to the beautiful fall setting, well-managed race and unique pancake and chicken gravy breakfast. Organizer Duane Boelman was pleased with this year’s turnout, considering the 17-year hiatus and the weather.

“I think it went great,” he said. “People had a great time. They’re thrilled it’s back.”
