Dennis E. Keppler

Dennis Edmund Keppler, 75, of rural St. Olaf, passed away Wednesday, July 7, 2021, at Mercy One in Elkader. He was born July 4, 1946, in Oelwein, to Irvin Joseph and Florence Angeline (Ries) Keppler. Dennis attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in Oelwein.

Larry G. Schuety

Larry G. Schuety, 73, of Aurora, passed away peacefully at St. Luke’s Hospice on Tuesday, July 6, 2021. He was born Sept. 10, 1947, at home in rural Elkader, to Fred C. and Alice Alma (Lahrs) Schuety. He was the youngest of seven children. Larry graduated from Central Community High School in 1965.

Jimmy 'Cowboy Jim' W. Reneau

Jimmy “Cowboy Jim” Wayne Reneau died peacefully in his home in McGregor, on the morning of Sunday, June 27, 2021. He is remembered by his many friends and neighbors of the Prairie du Chien, Marquette and McGregor area. A celebration of his life will take place at the shelter by the river in McGregor on the afternoon of Aug. 1. All are invited.

Fire at McGregor apartment building

McGregor Fire Chief Tom Sauer said the fire appears to have started because a resident had too many cords plugged in to an electrical outlet. Here, firefighter Joe Muehlbauer sprays down a couch that was removed from the building.

No one was injured, but all the residents are currently displaced, following a July 2 fire at a McGregor apartment building.

McGregor Masonic Block nets $100K Community Catalyst Grant


The city of McGregor was last week awarded a $100,000 grant through the Iowa Economic Development Authority’s Community Catalyst Building Remediation program. Funds will support rehabilitating the historic Masonic Block, located at 134-138 Main St. Black Swan Developers has proposed a nearly $2.6 million renovation project for the 15,000-square-foot building, which was constructed in 1866. The Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) last week announced $2.6 million in grant funding to help 26 communities across the state revitalize their downtown districts. The grants were awarded through the Community Catalyst Building Remediation program.
