Mar-Mac PD has two new officers

Two new full-time officers have joined the Mar-Mac Unified Police District. James “J.T.” Cunningham and Mason Kwilinski were sworn in April 10, following approval by the police commission. Cunningham is a Guttenberg native, while Kwilinski hails from Montevideo, Minn.

Mar-Mac Police Chief Robert Millin said both officers would begin working for the department within the next few weeks. Neither is certified, he noted, so the goal is to have them attend the academy this fall.

The police commission, at Millin’s recommendation, also approved the hiring of two part-time certified officers: Conrad Rosendahl, of Lansing, and Mak Kriener, of Cresco.

Marquette looks to crack down on nuisances

The city of Marquette is hoping to crack down on nuisance properties in the community. 

“We’ve received a lot of complaints about yards and houses that don’t look good,” said mayor Steve Weipert at the April 9 council meeting. “We’re trying to figure out a way to handle the situation.” 

“We’ve sent out some letters—some for trash and some for junk vehicles,” added city clerk Bonnie Basemann, but the notices have produced few results.

Earl W. Miller

Earl W. Miller, age 91, of Faribault, Minn., passed away Thursday, April 4, 2019, at Faribault Senior Living.

Earl Walter was born on July 5, 1927, on his family’s farm in McGregor, to Carl and Marguerite (Zahn) Miller.

21.34 feet is Mississippi’s sixth highest crest at McGregor

Water engulfed the Marquette riverfront, eventually reaching the base of the dike.

Once the Mississippi River reached 20 feet, a plastic-covered concrete barrier was placed at the foot of McGregor’s Main Street, to protect the town.

The Mississippi River crested at 21.34 feet at McGregor on Friday, April 5, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). This was the sixth highest recorded crest at the location and the largest flooding event since 2001.

Thanks to preparations made over the past few weeks, officials in both Marquette and McGregor said the impact was minimal.

“We thought it was necessary to be prepared for the worst,” stated Marquette mayor Steve Weipert.

MFL MarMac women’s ensemble receives coveted ‘outstanding performance’

The MFL MarMac women’s ensemble of seniors Shelby Martin, Emma Ammons, Abby Zeeh and Elizabeth Grady, along with sophomores Riley Whitney, Rose Grau and Anna Stoddard and freshman Abby Schellhorn, received a coveted “outstanding performance” for their rendition of the song “Caverns in the Clouds” at solo and small ensemble contest at Cresco on March 30. The honor is rare, given to just one solo or ensemble performance at each of the five vocal or instrumental “centers” at the event that day.

They’ll now have the opportunity to perform in the all-state Outstanding Performance Recital at Iowa State University in May.

Showcase will display MFL MarMac’s fine arts talent

The MFL MarMac Friends of the Arts will host a dessert showcase this Sunday, April 14, giving the public an opportunity to view some of the high school’s top fine arts talent. The event will be held in the high school auditorium, in Monona, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. 

For a small fee, attendees can savor a piece of cheesecake or gluten free chocolate cake, plus a drink, all while enjoying some of the school’s best individual speech performances and top-rated instrumental and vocal solos and ensembles. Senior artwork will also be exhibited from 2 to 7 p.m., highlighting the students’ years of learning and experimentation across media, exploration of social, political and cultural issues, as well as personal inquiry.

MFL MarMac voters support PPEL continuation

Voters in the MFL MarMac School District have supported the continuation of the physical plant and equipment levy (PPEL). According to unofficial results, 172 people voted “yes” and 15 voted “no” in the April 2 special election. 

Superintendent Dale Crozier said the levy is simply a continuation of an existing revenue source the district has had for the past 16 years. Nothing new is being added.

Monona Council will appoint Wright to fill vacancy

At its April 1 meeting, the Monona Council unanimously agreed to appoint Tim Wright to fill the spot on the council that was recently vacated by Doug Bachman. City administrator Dan Canton said Wright will be sworn in at the next regular meeting, on April 15. 

According to Canton, Wright’s appointment runs through the fall. At that time, if Wright would like an opportunity to complete the remaining two years of Bachman’s term, his name must be on the ballot for the November city election.

Beth Abel

Beth took orders from no one. Except God. Her physical work here is done and her journey as an angel watching over us has begun.

Beth Abel, 35, of Marquette,  died on Thursday, April 4, 2019, at Crossing Rivers Hospital in Prairie du Chien, Wis. Beth was born on Sept. 20, 1983, to Roger and Janette (Brown) Carlson in Prairie du Chien, Wis. She graduated from MFL MarMac in Monona in 2002.

Beth received her AAS in accounting from NICC Calmar in 2004 and, in September of 2005, Beth began her career at Peoples State Bank where she held many positions, including her last as a bookkeeper in the operations department at the main office. It wasn’t long before her co-workers knew Beth was family.

As you peruse the items available at McGregor Mercantile, you’ll find an increasing number have been labeled with a tag bearing the letters “MM,” for “Mercantile Made.”

“Our focus this year is on handmade items,” said Monica Tiffany, who opened the downtown McGregor store with husband Paul in 2016. “We want as little ‘made in China’ as possible and more ‘made in McGregor, Iowa.’ That makes it more special to me.”

The inspiration for this goal is Monica’s maternal grandmother, Elizabeth Moore.
