Mayor has big plans for Volga, the community she loves

The child of civil service oriented parents, Volga Mayor Carrie Taylor said politics were always “ingrained” within her, as was the love of small town Americana. The Manchester native chose to stay, rather than leave, because she wanted to be close to family and loved the community. While she had the opportunity to travel, opening doors and broadening horizons, none of those places ever felt like home.

“Home was in Iowa,” Taylor said. In her words, “you can always travel, but there’s no place like home,” so she chose “family over luxury,” and settled in Volga with husband Jay and their two boys.

Passing offense a highlight in Central loss

By Willis Patenaude, Times-Register

The Central football program entered the Oct. 9 game against 3-3 Northwood-Kensett mired in the struggles of rebuilding under a new coaching regime. While the 1-5 Warriors have shown signs of improvement, most notably in the punting game, where Evan Pensel seems to have solidified the position, averaging 27.6 yards per punt, the offense and defense are still searching for an identity. Northwood-Kensett won the match-up 70-21.

On the defensive side, tackling has been an ongoing issue, so much so that head coach Joe Koehn acknowledged the coaching staff’s efforts to improve it.

Central cross country competitive at South Winn

By Willis Patenaude, Times-Register

It was another competitive performance put in by Central’s cross country team at the Oct. 6 meet in South Winneshiek. The team once again saw medalists and season best times as the runners prepare for next week’s conference meet.

Beginning with the varsity girls, Delaney Scherf and Hannah Asche led the way, finishing 10th and 11th, respectively. They both had a time of 21:34, good enough to medal, and it was a season best for Scherf. In the field of 52 runners, Allie Mussman finished 23rd, with a season best 22:48. Other team members finished outside the top 25, including Jaydin Dettman, who ran a career best 23:37 for 31st, Taylor Moser (33rd), Maria Medberry (42nd) and Haley Mueller (43rd).
