Holiday Train stopping in Marquette on Dec. 4

The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train will stop in Marquette, at the marina parking lot, on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 2:45 p.m. (NIT file photo)

The Canadian Pacific Holiday Train will once again bring holiday cheer to the area as it stops in Marquette, at the marina parking lot, on Sunday, Dec. 4, at 2:45 p.m.

Now in its 18th year, the Holiday Train is adorned with thousands of lights depicting holiday scenes on 14 rail cars, one of which turns into a stage for musical performances.

However, putting on a dazzling light display is just half of the Holiday Train equation, as attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item or monetary donation as admission.

Monona Holiday Shop Hop runs Dec. 3-24

The Monona Chamber’s annual Holiday Shop Hop runs Saturday to Saturday again this year; however, it’s been expanded from one to three full weeks, from Dec. 3-24. This gives shoppers extra time, at their own pace, to select the places they will patronize to fill up their punch cards.

The Monona Chamber sponsors the event to promote local shopping, to keep cash registers ringing, dollars circulating around town, and sales tax growing for an added boost to merchants and the local economy.

Follow the lights to Christmas Hollow

By Audrey Posten, North Iowa Times Editor

Star light, star bright, everyone’s invited to see Lucy and Al Anderson’s Christmas lights. For the third year, the McGregor couple, who live at 215 W. Spring St., behind the city garage across from the middle school, will welcome people to visit Christmas Hollow.

Always an avid Christmas decorator, Lucy came up with the idea for Christmas Hollow three years ago. She and Al, who were then newly married, had recently moved into their home, which had a yard that offered ample decorating space.

The Andersons began decorating last month. Lucy comes up with the display ideas, while Al engineers solutions to make them happen.

Show your love for McGregor and Marquette's small businesses

By Audrey Posten, North Iowa Times Editor

The communities of McGregor and Marquette encourage residents and visitors alike to support small, local businesses as they shop for gifts this holiday season—beginning with Small Business Saturday, Nov. 26.

Twenty-five businesses—ranging from retail stores and salons to bars and restaurants—will participate in a “Shop Small: McGregor and Marquette” event on Saturday, offering activities, refreshments and special shopping deals. The event will start at 9 a.m. and run through 1 p.m., or later.

The Small Business Saturday concept was first launched in 2010 by American Express, as an alternative to the major holiday shopping days following Thanksgiving—Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

City of Monona ups MCED contribution

By Audrey Posten, North Iowa Times Editor

At its Nov. 21 regular meeting, the Monona City Council approved contributing $12,000 to Monona Chamber and Economic Development (MCED) for 2017, an increase of $2,000 from its 2016 pledge.

“Personally, I think it’s necessary,” said mayor Fran Passmore of MCED’s request for an increase. “We have to support economic development because it supports everybody. I think we’ve made a lot of improvements, and we’ve come a long way, but we have a lot further to go.”

Volunteers sought for Marquette beautification committee

By Audrey Posten, North Iowa Times

Marquette mayor Larry Breuer is looking for community members who would like to be part of a community beautification committee.

“I’d like to start a volunteer committee to put together some programs to better certain areas of town,” Breuer said at the city council’s regular meeting Nov. 15.

Breuer said he’d like the committee to target three areas, beginning with the entrance to Marquette on Highway 76. There, he explained, he’d like to see the west side of the road cleaned up, presenting a better impression to those entering town.

Career exploration taken to a new level at MFL MarMac

By Audrey Posten, North Iowa Times Editor

MFL MarMac juniors and seniors are being exposed to potential career opportunities as they’ve never been before through a program called Career Learning Link.

A partnership between Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC), Upper Explorerland and ECIA in Dubuque, Career Learning Link was created a little over a year ago thanks to a grant from the U.S. Department of Labor. It’s available in 26 different schools in Northeast Iowa, four of which—including MFL MarMac—are served by Cassie Martin, a youth career connect counselor with Upper Explorerland.

His class, along with several others at the McGregor Center, are participating in the Global Read Aloud, a project that works to connect the world through the reading of one book.

MFL MarMac high school students are making a commitment to remain drug- and alcohol-free through the new student organization SODA (Students Opposing Drugs and Alcohol).

The school’s drop-out prevention specialist, Jackie McGeough, developed the idea last school year and serves as the group’s advisor.

“I checked into it because I knew they didn’t have anything here geared toward substance abuse prevention. It drops off after fifth grade,” she said.
