Driver injured when snow plow was struck by train

A city of Monona employee was seriously injured Feb. 13, when the snow plow he was operating was struck by a train. 

The Clayton County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a dump truck versus train accident on West North Street, in Monona, at 11:54 a.m. According to a press release, deputies determined the driver was conducting snow removal operations when the vehicle was struck by an eastbound train containing five railcars. The city of Monona said the rail crossing was unmarked.

The driver of the dump truck was transported to Crossing Rivers Health in Prairie du Chien, Wis., and later transferred to Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, Wis., for treatment of serious injuries.

Harold Junior Krambeer

Harold Junior Krambeer, 77, of Farmersburg, died Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2020, at his home in Farmersburg. Harold was born Nov. 15, 1942, in Farmersburg, the fourth child of Harold John Krambeer and Leona Fascher Krambeer. He was baptized Dec. 13, 1942, at St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg and confirmed there on March 25, 1956. He graduated from Monona Farmersburg Community High School in 1960 and served his country in the United States Air Force as a photo interpretation specialist during the Vietnam War. 

On Dec. 4, 1965, Harold married Deanna Schlitter. One child, Ross, was born to this union. He worked for a number of years installing and repairing rural and domestic water systems for Duane Lubbers. He found this work his most rewarding. He finished his working career as manager of the Swiss Valley Farms Packaging Plant at St. Olaf.

Jennifer Yager—great granddaughter of White Springs’ long-time owner, Ethel Mann—and her husband Robert are working to rehab the site on Klein Brewery Road and reopen the restaurant in its former glory.

Robert, who has 20 years of experience in the restaurant business, said he’s contemplated the idea for awhile.

Bond vote for facilities improvement project is less than a month away

Voters in the MFL MarMac Community School District will head to the polls on Tuesday, March 3, to decide if $7.8 million in general obligation bonds should be issued to fund an extensive facilities improvement project.

The largest addition will be a fieldhouse to the west side of the high school building in Monona, which will encase two full-sized courts with a walking track.

“The two-court complex will convert into one full-sized competition court with bleachers that will extend from both sides,” said MFL MarMac Superintendent Dale Crozier in his latest “Crozier’s Comments” column. “The complex will include an entrance with a commons, locker rooms, a training room and a hallway to the main schoolhouse.”

DNR denies Pattison request to send 2 billion gallons of water out west annually

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) intends to deny a request from Pattison Sand Co. to withdraw approximately 2 billion gallons of water each year from two Jordan aquifer wells on its Clayton property and sell it to western states suffering from drought.

In a letter sent to Pattison on Feb. 4, the DNR said “removing such a large volume of water permanently from the basin does not meet statutory and regulatory permitting requirements. More specifically, this proposal does not meet the legal standard that Iowa’s public water ‘be put to beneficial use...in the interest of the people,’ which requires that public waters be conserved and protected in the name of ‘public health and welfare.’”

Anderson will play college football

MFL MarMac’s star running back, Kutter Anderson, has committed to play football at Morningside College, in Sioux City. The senior, surrounded by his family and teammates, signed a letter of intent last week.

Anderson became the school’s first 1,000-yard rusher this past season and earned both all-district and all-state accolades. That, paired with his leadership abilities, piqued Morningside’s interest, he said.

“They really liked my speed and my bursts and really liked my vision, being able to see cuts and make those cuts,” he commented.

Patricia Schlueter

Patricia Ann Ottaway, 76, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 9, at the Stonehill Care Center following a long battle with cancer.

Patricia (Pat) was born on Sept. 1, 1943, in Sabula, the daughter of Eugene and Edith (McMahan) Ottaway. She was married in 1962 and later divorced. She then married Edward Schlueter Jr. in 1988 and was happily married until his death in 2016. They enjoyed traveling together, gambling and spending time with family and friends.

Marlys Pfeiffer

Marlys Kathleen Pfeiffer, 91, of McGregor, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020, at Good Samaritan Society in Waukon, with her family at her side. Marlys was born on May 8, 1928, in Dubuque. She graduated from Dubuque Senior High School in Dubuque in May of 1946.

Marlys was united in marriage to the love of her life, Donald W. Pfeiffer, on June 25, 1946, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Dubuque. To this union seven children were born. In her spare time, Marlys enjoyed sewing, golfing, traveling and spending lots of time with her family and friends. 

Marlys is survived by her five children, Rick (Laura) Pfeiffer of Columbia, Mo.; Kirk (Barb) Pfeiffer of Sterling, Ill.; Kymm (Lee) Hinkel of Waukon; Kent (Penny) Pfeiffer of Marquette; and Kris (Scott) Dickey of Parker, Colo.; 14 grandchildren; and 17 great grandchildren.

'Look at how she walked through the fire'

Many MFL MarMac students showed their support for Lexy by wearing special brain tumor awareness shirts. Lexy is pictured front, center, with parents Becky and Ryan.

Keagan Smerud, a member of the MFL MarMac High School Student Council, which organizes the cancer awareness assembly each year, kicked off the event. “Contributing your support is greatly appreciated, and does not go unnoticed,” by those battling cancer, he said. “But your support doesn’t always have to come in the form of money. It can be spread through the giving of your resources and your time, such as lending an ear to listen or a hand to help.”

Over the past week, third graders held a fundraiser for MFL MarMac Friends Helping Friends. As of Friday morning’s assembly, they announced that nearly $3,400 had been raised.

Following the assembly, high school students like Ashley Weaver each tied a ribbon on their lockers. The ribbon color signified the type of cancer the student wanted to raise awareness for. Some students attached names to the ribbons, honoring friends or family member who have battled cancer.

At event, Johnson reflects on brain tumor diagnosis, recovery

Lexy Johnson’s favorite quote is “Positive thinking, positive outcome.” That sentiment was put to the ultimate test over the summer, when the MFL MarMac junior was diagnosed with a benign brain tumor.

“I was reminded that you should be thankful for all your blessings because life changes instantly,” said Lexy, who with parents Ryan and Becky, shared her story with fellow students and staff at the school’s annual cancer awareness assembly on Jan. 31.

Who said there’s nothing to do in northeast Iowa during the winter? Well, we’re not buying it. That’s why the North Iowa Times is continuing to feature some of the fun, healthy and educational activities area residents can enjoy during the colder months.

“Growing up, I was lucky to have a grandma and mom who did a lot of home cooking,” said Katie Ruff. But as she ventured off to college, and into a career field centered around food, she found many people didn’t share the experience.

That’s why, when Ruff opened her downtown McGregor store, By the Spoonful, offering cooking classes was one of her ultimate goals.
