Marion E. Moses

Marion Elizabeth Moses, age 84, of Garnavillo, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 2021, at MercyOne Elkader Medical Center after a courageous battle with Glioblastoma (brain cancer). She was born on Dec. 25, 1936, the daughter of Leander (Tommy) and Anna (Berns) Stroschein.

Marion received her education and graduated from the St. Joseph’s Catholic School in Garnavillo. On Sept. 5, 1957, Marion was united in marriage with Darwin Moses at St. Joseph’s Church in Garnavillo. Together, the couple owned and operated the Kist Bottling Company where Marion was known as the Pop Lady. Marion also worked as a line server at the casino in Marquette.

Donna L. Tenhoff

Donna Lee (Behrends) Tenhoff, 72, left her earthly home on Wednesday, Dec. 30, 2020, due to complications from COPD. She was born on July 21, 1948, in Monticello, the daughter of Glenn and Bernice (Wenger) Behrends. Donna worked for several area Manchester businesses and retired from Rockwell Collins in Manchester after 23 years of employment.

Eldon F. Rahmiller

Eldon Frank Rahmiller, 77, of Iowa Falls, passed away peacefully on Dec. 25, 2020, surrounded by family while under hospice care. Eldon, son of Howard and Vera Oldfather Rahmiller, was born on Oct. 18, 1943, in Oelwein. He spent his childhood in Volga, and graduated from Volga High School in 1961. On Dec. 26, 1966, Eldon and Gayle Peterson were married at the First Baptist Church in Cresco. They had two sons, Ryan and Brad.

Eldon earned a Purple Heart while serving with the 25th Infantry Division in Vietnam. Later, he graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with a bachelor of arts degree and a master of arts degree in education. He joined the Ellsworth Community College faculty in Iowa Falls as the media specialist until retirement in 2001.

Elkader Council hears Turkey River Recreational Corridor report

The Turkey River Recreational Corridor (TRRC) presented its annual report at a recent Elkader City Council meeting, detailing the accomplishments of the board over the past year. 

The formal 28E government entity, which is comprised of the Elkader, Clermont and Elgin communities, is tasked with developing and enhancing the existing natural resource base through the creation of land and water trails to serve as the catalyst for economic growth and development.

2020 has been a successful year for the MFL MarMac Bulldog Dance Team. The group earned third place in the Small Hoopla category at this fall’s Iowa State Dance and Drill Team Association State Dance Competition, in addition to a Division 1 rating in Class IV Pom, missing placing by just one point. Junior Kaylee Bachman earned a Division 1 rating in Class II Solos, and the team also received a distinguished academic award for having a combined grade point average over 3.5.

Coach Kelli Saxe is proud of the achievements, especially considering practice time for the team is limited.

Central celebrates Christmas, bringing joy during a difficult year

“The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear,” so says Buddy from the movie Elf. Nowhere was this embodied quite like at Central, where the teachers literally, and figuratively, sung for all to hear through decking the halls, decorating the doors and delighting the students with carols. 

According to student council advisor Christie Burlingame, it was all done with an emphasis on trying to get everyone in the spirit in a different and very difficult school year. 

“We wanted some cheer where some kids have none,” she said.

McGregor Library plans activities centered around The Polar Express

Kids can participate in a Polar Express book walk and check out the books at the library. They can also take home an activity to make their own train treat.

Hop aboard the Polar Express! From now until Jan. 15, the McGregor Public Library is offering a series of activities centered around the classic children’s book that, in 2004, was also made into an animated film.

Children’s librarian Luana Stiemke said the idea started when staff decorated the library’s tree for McGregor’s annual Festival of Trees in a Polar Express theme. She was also encouraged by the success of Halloween week activities, where, instead of a large group event, kids could visit the library on their own time to play games and win treats.

“So I wanted to do something similar over the holiday break,” she said.

A fourth quarter rally propelled the MFL MarMac girls basketball team to a 35-32 win over visiting Central on Dec. 22. 

The Warriors had control of the game early, allowing just two Bulldog points in the first quarter and taking an 18-15 lead into halftime. By the end of the third quarter, they were up 25-21. MFL MarMac stormed back in the final period, though, going on a 12-0 run to start the frame. Junior Miranda Lang scored 10 of those points, including two key shots from behind the arc, as the Bulldogs eked out a three-point victory.

Central girls lose defensive battle at MFL MarMac

It was another close loss for the Central girls basketball team on Dec. 22, as the MFL MarMac Bulldogs held on to win 35-32. Central was not without its chances to win the game, however. 

In fact, the Warriors led 25-21 heading into the fourth quarter, but were out-scored by the Bulldogs 14-7 in the final period, leading to the defeat. 

The defensive battle had the Warriors shooting just 24.3 percent from the field and a season-low 13.3 percent from the three-point line. They also shot 54.5 percent from the free throw line, making just 12 of 22 shots.
