CMSgt Thomas “Tom” Ray Kitterman, USAF Ret., age 74, died Oct. 4, 2020, with his family by his side.

Tom was born on a farm outside of Volga in northeast Iowa. In 1963, at the age of 17, he joined the Air Force and served until 1989, for a total of 26 years, four months and two days, as he proudly told anyone who asked. During his years of service, Tom had seven permanent duty stations and three short tours, including stations in Germany, Korea and Vietnam.

Keeping it in the family: Matt Baade takes over for father Lonnie as Luana fire chief

In July, the Luana Fire Department elected its first new chief in 20 years, as Matt Baade took over for his father Lonnie­. 

“It’s been kind of joked about for years: ‘When Lonnie steps down, Matt’s just going to take over,’” Matt quipped. 

“He’s always been a right-hand man to me, helping out,” noted Lonnie. “I knew it would happen. It felt good—that the guys trusted him to do it right.”

Being an Iowa native is special, and living in Clayton County as a resident of Elkader since 2007, Jennifer Garms has made the most out of it. The current county auditor is seeking a second term this fall to build on a legacy of transparency and communication, and ensuring that residents are consciously aware of the issues and how those issues affect them. 

It’s a career path that began as deputy auditor in 2007, shortly after Garms’ arrival in Elkader. It has since stretched into the community, with stops as president of the Elkader Opera House Theater Board and co-chair of the Main Street Elkader Promotions Committee, to currently serving on the Elkader Library Board.

Jane Lundquist closed the book on her time at the McGregor Public Library last week, retiring as children’s librarian after 15 years.

“I’ve always loved libraries, and I’d worked with children my whole life,” said Lundquist, who took the job after time as a teacher, parent educator at HAWC Empowerment and librarian in nearby Monona.

Stepping into the role wasn’t too difficult. The library’s children’s programs had good “bones.”

Elkader council, businesses discuss street closures at work session

An impassioned debate over street closures took place last week during a work session prior to the Elkader City Council, and there was no shortage of opinions and suggestions. At the heart of the debate is whether Elkader streets and alleys should be closed at all, regardless of the event, so the session was held to gather further public input, especially from businesses most affected by the closures. 

Main Street Elkader Executive Director Kate Lower presented several email comments, which expressed concern over the lack of communication and signage pertaining to street closures and when they will occur.

Meet the Candidates: State House District 55

This year’s race for State House District 55 involves a familiar match-up from 2018. In the Nov. 3 general election, incumbent Republican Michael Bergan will once again face Democratic challenger Kayla Koether, whom he defeated by just nine votes two years ago. District 55 comprises most of Winneshiek County, northern Fayette County and three townships in Clayton County, including Marion, Highland and Boardman. Bergan and Koether recently shared their thoughts on key issues with Times-Register reporter Willis Patenaude.

Learn about YRSF fire tower National Historic Register nomination project

Friends of Yellow River State Forest is exploring the possibility of restoring Iowa’s first and only fire tower and making it accessible to the public. To that end, a volunteer with the Friends group, Vicky Peterson, is working with Jennifer Price of Price Preservation Research, a historic preservation consultant, and the Iowa State Historic Preservation Office to get the fire tower listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Dunkerton defeats Central 52-6

The Central football team headed into the Oct. 2 game against the Dunkerton Raiders riding a high from their homecoming victory and coach Joe Koehn’s unwavering loyalty to running the football. The Raider defense was undaunted, stymieing the Warriors’ rush offense, holding it to 70 total yards for a 1.9-yards-per-carry average. The end result was a 52-6 loss, bringing the Warriors’ record to 1-4 on the season.

The Central volleyball team had a tough past week, dropping two matches in straight sets. 

On Sept. 29, the Warriors took on MFL MarMac, losing 25-15, 28-26 and 26-24. While the match was competitive, and the Warriors actually outperformed the Bulldogs in certain statistical categories such as serve efficiency, serve aces and blocks, they could not overcome a disparity in kills and kill errors.

Bulldog runners face strong fields at Jesup, Crestwood

The MFL MarMac cross country team raced in two events last week, including an invitational at Jesup on Sept. 29 and a meet hosted by Crestwood on Oct. 3.

Junior Sydney Moser was back in action at Jesup, leading the lady Bulldogs with an 18th-place finish with a time of 21:17.3. Freshman Clare Grau wasn’t far behind, running the course in 21:27.4 to place 25th. Freshmen Kaylee Walch and Ayla Gerndt were 85th and 87th, respectively, with times of 23:47.5 and 23:47.9, while freshman Ruby Koeller and sophomore Alexis Ross came in at 26:34.6 and 26:56.8 to take the 125th and 126th spots.
