County’s 14-day COVID-19 positivity rate goes over 19 percent

Clayton County saw an increase of 68 new COVID-19 cases over the past week—the largest one-week jump in a month. According to data from the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), the county’s total grew from 1,410 on Jan. 4 to 1,478 as of Jan. 11.

Over two weeks, the total has risen by 132 cases. 

Of Clayton County’s 1,478 confirmed cases, 176 are currently active. 

The county’s 14-day positivity rate, which measures the percentage of positive tests in that span, also continues to rise. It currently sits at 19.3 percent, up a point from last week. Over seven days, the positivity rate is 13 percent.

The MFL MarMac boys basketball team entered play last week on a three-game winning streak, but failed to keep the momentum alive in losses to Clayton Ridge and North Fayette Valley.

The 48-44 loss to Clayton Ridge on Jan. 5 was especially tough. The Bulldogs raced ahead 17-4 in the first quarter and maintained a 25-13 lead into halftime. But the Eagles came roaring back in the third period, using a 20-6 run to edge ahead 33-31. They continued to hold the Bulldogs off in the fourth, winning by four points.

Bulldogs remain perfect in duals

The MFL MarMac wrestling team remains perfect in duals this season with four more wins at the Upper Iowa Conference Duals at Riceville on Jan. 7. 

The night started with a 72-10 win over Clayton Ridge, which included 12 Bulldog victories due to forfeit. Koal Klenk lost his 106-pound match by 12-3 major decision and Nolan Lerch was pinned at 195 pounds.

Warrior wrestling is still a work in progress

It was a busy week for the Central wrestling program, with a girls meet at Anamosa, a dual at Riceville and hosting the Central Invitational. 

The girls took center stage at Anamosa, as Maria Medberry and Rebecca Suhr represented the school well. Medberry placed second in the 139-pound bracket, going 2-1 with two falls, and Suhr placed third at 147 pounds, going 1-2 with one fall. 

One of Medberry’s falls took only 12 seconds over Addison Juhl from Waverly-Shell Rock and Suhr’s lone fall came in a swift 20 seconds over Corrigan Wilson from Marion.

The Central girls basketball team returned to its winning ways after the holiday break, defeating Edgewood-Colesburg 58-52 and routing Postville 55-27 this past week. 

The team showed a little vacation rust in the first half against Ed-Co, trailing 28-21 before cutting into the lead coming out of halftime. The Warriors eventually took the lead in the fourth period and never let it go.

The MFL MarMac girls basketball team kicked off the 2021 portion of its schedule last week, grabbing a win over Clayton Ridge before suffering just its third loss of the season against undefeated North Fayette Valley. 

The Bulldogs hosted Clayton Ridge Jan. 5, winning 48-34 thanks to a big second half. Although MFL MarMac jumped ahead 9-6 in the first quarter, the Eagles had the better second period, giving them a 19-17 lead heading into halftime. The Bulldogs responded in the third, though, going on an 18-8 run that put them ahead 35-27. They only increased the lead in the final period, winning by 14 points despite shooting under 20 percent from the field.

Central boys lose to Ed-Co, but rally to victory against Postville

The Central boys basketball team came back from the holiday break looking to turn around a three-game losing streak, but they were met by a defensive brick wall in Edgewood-Colesburg, who held them to just 19 points. The Warriors went on to lose 69-19, never scoring more than six points in any period. 

Statistically, the Warriors struggled in every category. They shot 17.1 percent from the field and only 12.5 percent on three-point shots. Overall, they only made seven of 41 shots, were out-rebounded 38-21 and turned the ball over 21 times.

Marilyn J. Moody

Marilyn Jean (Standorf) Moody, 77, of McGregor, wonderful mother and grandmother, was taken from this world too early due to COVID-19 on Tuesday, Jan. 5, 2021, at Great River Care Center in McGregor.

She was born July 9, 1943, to Lawrence and Lorraine (Otto) Standorf in Prairie du Chien, Wis. Marilyn attended Prairie du Chien, Wis., schools and later attended the University of Wisconsin in Platteville, Wis., earning a bachelor of science degree.

Investigation leads to discovery of meth lab

A Jan. 3 investigation in downtown Marquette has led to the discovery of a meth lab.

According to a press release, at approximately 2:19 p.m., the Mar-Mac Police Department responded to a business on First Street, in the city’s corporate limits, for an allegation of domestic abuse.

During the investigation, an officer discovered what appeared to be an active “one-pot” methamphetamine clandestine laboratory. The clandestine laboratory was safely dismantled by specially trained personnel with the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office.

CCED effort will bring EV charging stations to five Clayton County communities this year


Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations will be installed in public spaces in Elkader, Guttenberg, Marquette, McGregor and Strawberry Point this spring, through an effort spearheaded by the Clayton County Energy District. The project aims to reverse the county’s identity as a charging station desert, attracting tourists with electric vehicles to local destinations. Each community will get one of these Blink dual port, level 2 pedestal chargers.
