Jean D. Ruegnitz

Jean Dorene Ruegnitz, age 89, of Garber, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 2021, at UnityPoint Finley Hospital in Dubuque. She was born Nov. 28, 1931, in Greeley, the daughter of Joseph and Ruth (Lillibridge) Tinkey. 

Jean was raised and educated in the area, graduating from Edgewood High School in 1950. On Nov. 26, 1954, Jean was united in marriage with Gene Ruegnitz at Trinity Methodist Church in Edgewood, and two children were born to this union.

Jean was a homemaker, but made quilts for church missions and volunteered for many other jobs for the community. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg.

MFL MarMac virtual Wednesdays will continue through February

District will transition to full in-person learning in March

MFL MarMac will continue its hybrid learning model—in-person classes Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Friday with virtual learning on Wednesdays—through the end of February, before slowly transitioning to in-person instruction five days per week. The school board gave the go-ahead at its Jan. 11 meeting, based on the recommendation of superintendent Dale Crozier.

“What I’ve noticed is what we’re doing is working,” Crozier told the board. “Or something we’re doing is working.”

Mar-Mac Police Department releases 2020 annual report

Mar-Mac Police Chief Robert Millin recently shared the law enforcement district’s 2020 annual report, giving a “behind the scenes” look at the department, its personnel, daily activities, comparisons to previous years and more.

Over the past year, Millin said the department has experienced a significant upgrade and improvements to achieve the agency’s original values, goal and mission.

Woodland Eye Clinic says goodbye to Dr. Landis, welcomes Dr. Stebel

“I am excited to welcome Dr. Bruce Stebel to Elkader and to the Woodland Eye Clinic. In some ways, he is a younger version of me.” 

With that, Dr. Bruce Landis ends his 39-year career as Elkader’s go-to optometrist. It was a career filled with fond memories of patients and people who will be missed, as well as one that survived the 1980s farm crisis, the flood of 2008, the selling of the office to the Woodland Eye Clinic and the modernization and computerization of the medical practice of eye care.

Matelski joins Monona Police Department

The Monona Police Department is back at full strength, with the addition late last month of officer Nicholas Matelski. He joins police chief Jo Amsden and officer Riley Doeppke.

Originally from Milwaukee, Wis., Matelski has lived in Monona for the past three years. Although he has no prior law enforcement experience, he jumped at the opportunity to enter a career field that’s always interested him.
