Landis brings music to change the soul

What makes a musician? Is it passion? Practice? Or the performing? Or, are they simply born that way? For local artist and Elkader native, Sophia Landis, in her own words, “I did not choose music. Music chose me. I basically came out of the womb singing.” 

She was born in the Elkader hospital back when it still delivered babies, and she began taking piano lessons at age three and has no memory of a time when music wasn’t an integral part of her life. She was inspired by her parents, who she admitted were not “heavily involved in music,” but they “sensed” the musical urge and talent in their daughter and provided every opportunity they could to nurture that talent.

Construction on the U.S. Highway 18 bridge shifted to the Iowa side early last week. The move limits access on and off the bridge in the busy Marquette intersection which, paired with inattentive drivers and a Wisconsin Highway 82 detour through the community due to construction on the Black Hawk Bridge at Lansing, has resulted in confusion and long waits.

Marquette will have July 4 fireworks but no parade

Garnavillo, Guttenberg cancel all activities

The Marquette Council, at its June 9 meeting, decided to cancel the city’s annual July 4 parade this year, but will move forward with fireworks. 

The fireworks will be shot off from the bluff behind the Cobblestone Inn and Suites Saturday night, July 4.

Another Marquette staple that will not happen this Independence Day is the Flea Market Under the Bridge. There will be arts and crafts vendors in nearby McGregor, though. Sponsored by the McGregor-Marquette Chamber of Commerce, the event will be held outside, around Triangle Park, with limited indoor vendors at the Backwoods Event Center.

Buses—the queen in schools’ Return to Learn chess game

As Iowa school districts prepare their “Return to Learn” plans for submittal to the state by July 1, MFL MarMac Superintendent Dale Crozier said infrastructure—particularly transportation—will likely play one of the biggest roles in whether kids can safely return to school this fall.

Speaking to the school board at its June 8 meeting, he likened the scenario to a game of chess: “You start out with pawns and then you get to the bishops and then the queen. The big pieces don’t move until the end of the game. The queen in this chess game is the buses.”

Carter Street project finds approval

An Elkader City Council-approved infrastructure project on Carter Street beginning next spring will see changes, some welcomed for their environmental impact and some not so welcomed for the impact on the scenery and front lawn aesthetics.

Marquette attractions reopening

Several city of Marquette-operated attractions or venues are opening for the season. The Driftless Area Wetlands Centre and Marquette Community Center were open to people last week, and the Marquette Depot Museum and Information Center will welcome visitors starting Thursday, June 18.

The Wetlands Centre will operate its regular hours, said director Alicia Mullarkey, but there will be guidelines to help protect people from COVID-19.

“We’re roping off areas we can’t disinfect as easily, and we’ll try to keep people outside as much as possible,” she said.

Charles R. Bries

Charles Robert Bries, 76, slipped peacefully from this world at Kavanagh (Hospice) House on June 12, 2020, a mere 10 months after the passing of his dear wife. He abandoned his earthly existence with her ashes beside him, his eldest daughter’s hand in his, while listening to the lyrics he often sang to his children: “I want to go home. I want to go home. Lord, how I want to go home.”

Charlie, ever the firecracker, was born as the 11th of 16 children on July 4, 1943, into the family of Arnold and Regina (Ulbrich) Bries near Luxemburg. He was joined in marriage to Mary Jean (Berns) on Feb. 17, 1968. Over the course of their 51 years of marriage, Charlie and Mary raised four children who blessed them with 12 grandchildren.

Janet E. Meyers

Janet Elaine Meyers, 76, of McGregor, died Friday, June 12, 2020, at her home in McGregor. She was born on June 13, 1943, to Elmer and Arlene (Larson) Erb in Postville, where she spent her childhood. Janet attended the Bailey Country School until seventh grade, then transferred to Luana School, where she graduated with the class of 1960.

Janet was united in marriage with Earl Bothel Jr. on Sept. 14, 1963, and four children were born to this union. Janet enjoyed going to auctions, painting, cooking and playing euchre and canasta with her sister and mom. She was an avid softball player and she loved her faith and family. Janet liked to “putz” around.

Lester L. Groth

Lester Lee Groth, 78, of Garber, passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2020, at his residence. He was born on April 11, 1942, in Oelwein, the son of Ernest and Velma (Willie) Groth. Lester was raised and educated in the Elkport area, attending the Dannenbring Country School until the third grade. He then attended the Elkport schools and graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1961. After graduation, Lester farmed and worked at Farley and Letcher for a short period of time. 

On Jan. 15, 1972, Lester was united in marriage to Una Horstman at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Guttenberg. Three sons were born to this union. The couple farmed together on the family farm, raising a variety of animals as well as grain farming.

Norma J. Erickson

Norma Jean Erickson, 92, of Farmersburg, died Monday, June 1, 2020, at her daughter’s home in Delhi. Norma was born May 17, 1928, to Herman and Florence (Homan) Plummer in La Crosse, Wis. She attended school in Waukon.

Norma was united in marriage with Charles A. Erickson on June 10, 1946, at The Little Brown Church in Nashua. Three children were born to this union. Norma was a wonderful homemaker and farmer’s wife. She enjoyed gardening, playing cards and games, fishing in Minnesota, dancing and seeing old cars. She found great joy in visiting with neighbors and loved having the grandchildren over. She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Farmersburg and the American Legion Auxiliary.
